Abbot Kinney opened Venice of America as a beach resort on July 4, 1905, and dug several miles of canals to drain the marshes; the town stayed independent until Los Angeles annexed it in 1926.1 Most canals were filled and paved in 1929, cutting thirteen to six; the remaining canals were renovated in 1992 and reopened in 1993.2
Coffee here follows three streets: Abbot Kinney Boulevard, with its boutiques, Ocean Front Walk along the sand, and Washington Boulevard down at the pier. The earliest cups are inland: Blue Bottle on Abbot Kinney and The Cow's End on Washington both open at 06:00, while the boardwalk cafés start at 08:00 or 09:00.
Local tip: For a coffee on the sand before the boardwalk wakes up, The Cow's End on Washington Boulevard opens at 06:00 near the pier; Fig Tree and Castanea on Ocean Front Walk open at 08:00 and 09:00.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard
The boulevard was part of West Washington Boulevard until the late 1980s, when community groups and property owners pushed to rename it after the founder; the change is widely read as a move to attract upmarket shops.1 Intelligentsia, at No. 1331, serves the Angeleno, an iced latte with agave.3
Blue Bottle at No. 1103 is the earliest opener on the street, daily 06:00–19:00, with 3 Square Café + Bakery a few doors up at No. 1121. The 1500 and 1600 blocks hold Shuhari Matcha Café at No. 1522, Fast Times Coffee at No. 1629 and Kohi by Owa at No. 1635, with Alfred at No. 1661. Boulevard Coffee sits at the quieter south end, No. 2321.
Ocean Front Walk and Windward Avenue
Ocean Front Walk is a pedestrian promenade about 2.5 miles long, with Muscle Beach, the outdoor gym, at the south end of the Venice Beach Recreation Center.1 Windward Avenue keeps an arched arcade over parts of both sidewalks, left from the Italian Renaissance-style buildings of the early 1900s.1
Menotti's Coffee Stop at 56 Windward Avenue, a few steps from the sand next to the Townhouse bar, makes flat whites and cortados and is often named among the best coffee in Venice.3 On the boardwalk itself, Fig Tree at No. 431 serves brunch from 08:00 and stays open until 20:30 on Fridays and Saturdays; Castanea Sicilian Cafe at No. 1307 opens daily 09:00–18:00, and Rad Coffee is at No. 1425.
Washington Boulevard and the pier
The Venice Fishing Pier, a 1,310-foot concrete structure, opened in 1964, closed after El Niño storms damaged it in 1983, and reopened in the mid-1990s.1 Near the pier, The Cow's End at 34 Washington Boulevard is a family-owned café with an upstairs loft, serving drip coffee, bagels and breakfast.3 It opens at 06:00 from Monday to Saturday and has outdoor tables.
Farther inland on Washington, Canali Cafe is at No. 123, and Joni's Coffee Roaster Cafe at No. 522, next to Cafe Buna at No. 552.
Venice Boulevard and Rose Avenue
Goodboybob, the roaster founded by Erich Joiner, opened a counter in July 2026 inside Deus Ex Machina, the motorcycle and surf shop at 1001 Venice Boulevard. The coffee is roasted at its plants in Torrance and Los Angeles; its original café, opened in 2017, is in Santa Monica.4 The Venice counter serves daily 07:00–16:00. Toward the beach, Bellissimo at 68 Venice Boulevard is open daily 07:30–20:00.
At the north end of Venice, Rose Avenue has Groundwork, which began in 1990 as a rare-book and tea shop and became one of Southern California's first certified organic coffee roasters.3 Saint Maxime, at No. 560, opens Wednesday to Sunday 08:00–14:00.
