Los Feliz sits below Griffith Park, between the Los Angeles River and Western Avenue, with Hollywood Boulevard and Fountain Avenue to the south. The Feliz family owned the land from 1795, when José Vicente Féliz was granted Rancho Los Feliz.1 Its shops and cafés cluster in Los Feliz Village, along Vermont and Hillhurst avenues between Prospect Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard.1

The neighborhood has one odd footnote in coffee history: in February 2014 the comedian Nathan Fielder opened Dumb Starbucks at 1802 Hillhurst Avenue as a stunt for his television show, and it lasted about three days before it was shut down.2 Today several cafés on Vermont serve until 20:00 or 22:00.

Local tip: Driving up to Griffith Observatory? Stop at The Trails Cafe on Fern Dell Drive on the way; it opens at 08:00, and the Mt. Hollywood Trail starts from the observatory lot.

Hillhurst Avenue

Maru Coffee at 1936 Hillhurst began serving in late September 2016. Its founders, Jacob Park and Joonmo Kim, took the name from San Ma Ru, an old Korean phrase meaning mountaintop, a nod to high-grown beans; Park is a certified Q Grader, trained to score coffee quality.3 It opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Cafe Los Feliz at No. 2118 is a bakery café open from 07:00, until 18:00 from Monday to Saturday. The Guest House at No. 1750 serves daily 07:00–16:00, and All Time at No. 2040 does brunch from 08:00 to 15:00 and reopens from 17:00 to 22:00. For a weekday coffee before 07:00, Blue Bottle on Ambrose Avenue, just off Hillhurst, opens at 06:30.

Vermont Avenue and Sunset

Vermont Avenue has the late hours. DRNK at 1530 North Vermont opens at 06:00 on weekdays and closes at 22:00, WKNDR at No. 1820 serves daily 08:00–22:00 with a brunch menu, and Bru Coffeebar at No. 1866 is open daily 07:00–20:00 with Wi-Fi.

Down at Sunset Boulevard, Handles Coffee at 4459 West Sunset serves daily 07:30–16:30 and has Wi-Fi. Go Get Em Tiger at 4630 Hollywood Boulevard opens daily 06:00–18:00. Fun Ol' Cakes at 4963 West Sunset opens in the evening, from 19:00 to midnight from Tuesday to Friday.

Griffith Park and the Observatory

Griffith J. Griffith and his wife Christina gave 3,015 acres to the city on December 16, 1896, and the park now covers 4,310 acres. Griffith Observatory was completed in 1935, and the Mt. Hollywood Trail starts from its parking lot off Vermont Canyon Road; Ferndell became a city Historic-Cultural Monument in 1973.4

Three cafés serve the park. The Trails Cafe at 2333 Fern Dell Drive opens at 08:00 and serves until 17:00 on weekdays and 18:00 at weekends. Cafe at the End of the Universe sits inside the Observatory at 2800 East Observatory Avenue, with outdoor tables, and Franklin's Cafe & Market at 2650 Vermont Canyon Road has Wi-Fi and seats inside and out.

Thai Town on Hollywood Boulevard

On October 27, 1999, the City Council made the six blocks of Hollywood Boulevard between Normandie and Western avenues the first place in the United States named Thai Town; Songkran, the Thai New Year, closes the boulevard on the first Sunday in April.5 Thai Town borders Los Feliz to the north and east.5

Kanomwaan at 5261 Hollywood Boulevard opens in the afternoon and stays open until 22:00 or 22:30, and CoCo's Kanom Thai at No. 5155 serves daily 11:00–22:00. Obet & Del's at No. 5233 is a morning stop, open daily 06:30–16:30.
