West LA here means the Los Angeles neighborhoods between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica: Westwood around UCLA, Brentwood along San Vicente Boulevard, Sawtelle west of the 405, and Mar Vista to the south.12 Sawtelle was its own town, incorporated in 1899 around a home for disabled soldiers, and Los Angeles annexed it in July 1922.1

Westwood Village, the shopping district built from 1929 just south of the UCLA campus, was designed with a Mediterranean theme and clay tile roofs; UCLA opened for classes the same year.3 Coffee runs late on Sawtelle and in the Village, while the boulevards to the south open earliest.

Local tip: For a late cup on the Westside, Volcano Tea House on Sawtelle serves until midnight, and Literati Cafe on Wilshire in Brentwood stays open until 23:00 on weekdays.
