Specialty coffee in Los Angeles is spread out rather than packed into one district. The roasters that run their own bars sit in Cypress Park, the Arts District, South LA, Culver City, Venice and Beverly Hills, with Westwood & West LA and Mid-City & Pico-Robertson holding a few more each than anywhere else.

The term has a working definition: one South LA roaster describes specialty coffee as beans that score 80 or more points on the Specialty Coffee Association scale, roasted to bring out their own character.1 Several roasters work two ways at once: Lightwave, for one, roasts for its own bar and for other coffee shops, cafés and restaurants.1

Local tip: For the earliest roaster coffee on the Westside, Alana's on Venice Boulevard opens at 06:30; in the Arts District, Boxx on East 3rd Street opens at 07:00 every day.
