Culver City is a separate city from Los Angeles. Harry Culver founded it, and it incorporated on September 20, 1917; it had 40,779 residents in 2020 on about 5.1 square miles.1 Thomas Ince built its first film studio in 1918, MGM took over that lot in 1924, and it is now Sony Pictures Studios, which is why the city calls itself the Heart of Screenland.1
From the early 1990s the city renovated its downtown, around the meeting of Culver and Washington boulevards, and that is where most of its cafés are.1 The Metro E Line stops at Culver City station, the line's western end from June 2012 until it reached Santa Monica in May 2016.1
Local tip: Want a laptop-free coffee break? Caffe Luxxe in the Washington Triangle Building has no Wi-Fi by design; for Wi-Fi, Village Well on Culver Boulevard has it.
