Bushwick was a German brewing district: by 1890 Brewer's Row held 14 breweries in 14 blocks, and the last two, Schaefer and Rheingold, closed in 1976.1 Its Broadway shopping strip was looted and burned in the 1977 blackout, and today Bushwick has the largest concentration of Hispanic residents in Brooklyn, mostly from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.1 Its warehouses and factory lofts now hold roasters and cafés.

Ridgewood, across the Queens line, was also settled by Germans, and Gottscheers from present-day Slovenia followed after World War I; its rows of brick houses are protected in ten national historic districts listed in 1983 and four city landmark districts.2 The M train runs through it on Myrtle Avenue, with stops at Seneca Avenue, Forest Avenue and Fresh Pond Road.2

Local tip: SEY's Grattan Street café and La Cabra's Willoughby Avenue roastery both close by 18:00; for coffee after dark, Dayglow on Wilson Avenue serves until 23:00 and House Party at 1178 Bushwick Avenue until midnight.
