Astoria's Greek community grew sharply from the 1960s to the 1980s, and a Greek Town took shape in the late 1960s with tavernas, bakeries, cafés and Orthodox churches; numbers fell in the 2000s and rose again in the 2010s as Greece's economy faltered.1 Arabic shops and cafés arrived on Steinway Street, between 28th Avenue and Astoria Boulevard, in the 1990s, and the strip is known as Little Egypt.1
Long Island City, to the south, faces Midtown across the East River and ends at Newtown Creek. Rezoned from industry to housing in 2001, it added 41 apartment buildings between 2010 and 2017, among them the Hunters Point South and Queens West towers on the waterfront.2 The 7 train stops at Vernon Boulevard–Jackson Avenue and Hunters Point Avenue, and the N and W serve Astoria from Broadway up to Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard.21
Local tip: For a late coffee in Astoria, head to Steinway Street: Haraz stays open until 01:00 at weekends, and Omonia Cafe on Broadway serves until 01:30 every night.
