DUMBO, short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, got its name in 1978 from residents who hoped an ugly label would keep developers away.1 In the 1890s the waterfront between the two bridges was a factory district where the Arbuckle Brothers processed coffee and sugar, and the cardboard box was invented in Robert Gair's building on Washington Street.1 The city made it a historic district on December 18, 2007.1

Brooklyn Heights, on the bluff to the south down to Atlantic Avenue, was the first neighborhood in the city given historic-district protection, in 1965.2 Downtown Brooklyn lies to the east, served by the Borough Hall/Court Street and Jay Street–MetroTech stations.2

Local tip: The Washington Street view of the Manhattan Bridge is quietest early in the morning; Butler on Water Street opens at 07:00 on weekdays, so pick up a coffee on the way.
