The Financial District fills the southern tip of Manhattan, where New Amsterdam began; Stone Street, paved in 1658, was the colony's first cobblestone street.1 The city's market in stocks grew up in coffee houses. Brokers tied to the Buttonwood Agreement of 1792 did business at the Merchants' Coffee House, and in early 1793 they opened the Tontine Coffee House diagonally across the corner of Wall and Water streets.2

Tribeca, the Triangle Below Canal, got its name in the early 1970s and is bounded by Canal, West and Chambers streets and Broadway.3 Its warehouses once held the butter, cheese and eggs of the Washington Market, which opened in 1813 as the Bear Market, and four historic districts protect the old blocks.3 Coffee here follows the office week: Ground Central on Coenties Slip, Cafe Clementine on West Broadway and Flavors on John Street close at weekends.

Local tip: On a weekend morning near Wall Street, skip the weekday-only cafés: Tutto Calcio on John Street opens at 07:00 every day, and Conwell Coffee Hall on Hanover Street at 09:00.
