Yorkville, the Upper East Side's eastern half from East 79th to 96th Street between Third Avenue and the East River, drew German immigrants from about 1880, and more moved uptown from Kleindeutschland after the General Slocum disaster of 1904.1 In 1926 the New York Times called it the "exclusive domain of Czechoslovaks, Hungarians and Germans", and the blocks from 79th to 83rd Street are still known as Little Hungary.1
On the western side, Museum Mile runs up Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 110th Street, past the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 82nd, the Neue Galerie at 86th, the Guggenheim at 88th and the Jewish Museum at 92nd.2 The Q train's Second Avenue Subway, opened on January 1, 2017, stops at 72nd, 86th and 96th streets.3
Local tip: Café Sabarsky closes on Tuesdays and takes no bookings for breakfast or lunch: arrive before 16:00 for a full meal, or later for coffee and cake, which walk-ins can still order.
