Greenwich Village runs from 14th Street south to Houston Street and from Broadway west to the Hudson River, and the West Village is usually counted from Seventh Avenue westward.1 Much of it was built up before the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 imposed Manhattan's grid, so the old streets kept their irregular pattern: narrow, angled and mostly named rather than numbered.1

Coffeehouses shaped the neighborhood's reputation. Off-Off-Broadway theater began here in 1958 in coffeehouses such as Caffe Cino at 31 Cornelia Street, and the folk scene of the 1960s played at Gerde's Folk City, Cafe Wha? and the Gaslight Cafe.1 The specialty era started here too: Joe Coffee began in 2003 as a single café at 141 Waverly Place.2

Local tip: For an early start near Washington Square, Murray's Bagels on Sixth Avenue opens at 06:00 and Joe Coffee on LaGuardia Place at 07:00, every day of the week.

MacDougal Street, from Reggio to the Gaslight

MacDougal Street runs one way south from West 8th Street to Prince Street; between Waverly Place and West 3rd Street it is called Washington Square West and the house numbers change.3 Caffe Reggio has been at No. 119 since 1927, and in 1959 John F. Kennedy, then running for president, gave a speech outside its door.3

Reggio's 1902 espresso machine burned coal until the café switched to gas in the 1970s, and the son of Niso and Hilda Cavallacci, who bought the café some 20 years before that, owns it today.2 A few doors down, Café Wha? at No. 115 gave Bob Dylan his first New York gig, and the Gaslight Cafe across the street at No. 116, now closed, hosted Kerouac, Ginsberg and Joan Baez.3 The former San Remo Cafe, a Beat hangout, stood at No. 93 on the Bleecker Street corner.3

Bleecker Street and Porto Rico Importing

Patsy Albanese, an Italian immigrant, opened Porto Rico Importing Co. at 195 Bleecker Street in 1907. In 1958 the Longo family bought it and moved it across the street to 201 Bleecker, the former Longo Sanitary Bakery; Peter Longo, the third generation, still lives upstairs, and the shop helped start the fashion for flavored coffee in the 1980s.2 In March 2025 it raised a medium latte or cappuccino from US$4.90 to US$5.20, and a pound of bulk beans from US$15.99 to US$16.99.4

Farther west on Bleecker, Kerber's Farm at No. 264 serves daily 07:00–20:00, Hungry Ghost Coffee is at No. 315 and Do Not Feed Alligators at No. 337 stays open until 21:00 from Monday to Saturday. Brooklyn Kolache at No. 185 closes by 15:00.

Rosecrans opened at 7 Greenwich Avenue in 2019, and its owners also run Ad Hoc Collective, a café and home-goods shop.2 On Hudson Street, Blackstone Coffee Roaster is at No. 502 and Merriweather Coffee and Kitchen at No. 428. Qahwah House, the Yemeni coffeehouse founded in Michigan in 2017, has a Carmine Street branch that draws a crowd late at night.56

Around Washington Square and NYU

Washington Square, roughly the center of the Village, was a potter's field from 1797 to 1823, and New York University has had a campus beside it since the 1830s.1 The West 4th Street–Washington Square subway station lies under Sixth Avenue, and Christopher Street station, to the west, was renamed Christopher Street–Stonewall on June 28, 2024.1

South of the square, Joe Coffee at 550 LaGuardia Place opens daily 07:00–19:00 and has Wi-Fi, with Mille-Feuille bakery and Chihiro Tea next door at No. 552. Irving Farm roasts and pours at 78 West 3rd Street, and Marlton Espresso Bar at 1 West 8th Street opens 07:00–18:00. For an early start, Murray's Bagels at 500 Sixth Avenue opens at 06:00 every day; Think Coffee at 73 Eighth Avenue stays open until 22:00.
