Williamsburg faces Manhattan across the East River, and the Williamsburg Bridge, opened in 1903, brought Lower East Side families over in such numbers that it became one of the city's most crowded neighborhoods.1 Its North Side was traditionally Polish and Italian, a large Satmar Hasidic community has lived south of Division Avenue since World War II, and artists filled its warehouses from the 1970s and in larger numbers in the 1990s.1

Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood in Brooklyn, ends at Newtown Creek across from Long Island City, and its Polish community, the second-largest concentration in the country after Chicago, centers on Manhattan Avenue.2 A 2005 rezoning of 175 waterfront blocks in both neighborhoods brought the high-rises that now line the river.2

Local tip: For the earliest weekday coffee near the Bedford Avenue L station, Pueblo Querido on North 6th Street opens at 06:30, half an hour before Devoción on Grand Street.
