From Chelsea and the High Line, this part of Manhattan runs east across the Flatiron District, which reaches roughly from 14th to 23rd Street between Sixth Avenue and Park Avenue South, to Union Square, Gramercy and Kips Bay.1 The Flatiron name came into use around 1985, and the web startups that crowded its lofts in the 2000s gave the city's tech trade its nickname, Silicon Alley.1

On the West Side, the High Line follows a freight viaduct dedicated in 1934 and shut in 1980 for 1.45 miles from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street; its first section opened as a park on June 8, 2009, and drew eight million visitors in 2019.2 Cafés cluster at its foot along Ninth and Tenth avenues and, to the east, around Madison Square and Union Square.

Local tip: On Greenmarket mornings at Union Square, buy coffee before you shop: Gotham Coffee Roasters on West 19th Street opens at 07:30, half an hour before the stalls.
