Batignolles was a village before it was a Paris neighborhood. Merged with Monceau, it ran its own affairs as a rural commune from February 1830 until the annexation of 1860, when the 17e took in the part inside the city’s fortifications.1 A goods station opened here in 1844, and rail land shaped the district for the next century and a half.1
Coffee in the 17e centers on that old village, where Dose and Terres de Café sit a few minutes apart. Rue des Dames has more cafés than any other street in the arrondissement, followed by Rue Poncelet, up toward Avenue des Ternes, and then Rue des Batignolles, Rue Lemercier and Rue Laugier. Farther west, L’Escale on Avenue de la Grande Armée serves until 02:00.

Getting to Batignolles and the 17e
Lines 2, 3, 13 and 14 all serve the quarter, along with tram T3b on the northern boulevards.1 The most useful stop for coffee is Pont-Cardinet on line 14, opposite the Square des Batignolles, with the line running beneath the garden.2 Brochant on line 13 is the stop for Rue Brochant and the Parc Martin-Luther-King, which Porte de Clichy, on lines 13 and 14, also serves.3
Manet’s café and the Square des Batignolles
The painters who became the Impressionists gathered at the Café Guerbois, then at 9–11 Grande Rue des Batignolles and today 9 Avenue de Clichy. Manet’s circle met there from the late 1860s, with Degas, Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Zola among them, and in 1874 they settled there on the group show held at Nadar’s.4 The premises later became a brasserie and then a clothing shop, so there is nothing left to order.4
The Square des Batignolles dates from 1862: 1.7 ha of English-style garden by Adolphe Alphand, with a grotto, a waterfall and a small lake with ducks and swans, along the trench where trains leave Saint-Lazare.2 Dose, at 82 Place du Docteur Félix Lobligeois, has a sunny terrace beside it, and you can carry a cup into the park.5 It opens from 08:00 on weekdays and 08:30 at weekends, closing at 18:30.
Coffee bars from Rue des Batignolles to Ternes
Terres de Café calls its shop at 33 Rue des Batignolles one of its historic coffee bars; it was renovated in 2025.6 Vague Coffee is at 76 Rue Boursault, The Coffee at 12 Rue Brochant, and Café Joyeux at 64 Rue des Batignolles. On Rue Lemercier, Café Germaine at No. 32 belongs to Octave, a Pilates, yoga and ceramics studio that opened in March 2026.7 L’Entithé, a vegetarian tea room, is at 52 Rue des Batignolles.7
On the Ternes side, the roaster Loutsa has a specialty counter at 11 Rue Lebon, open from 08:30 Tuesday to Friday and only until 12:30 on Sundays. Kaffeehaus is close by at 11 Rue Poncelet.
Clichy-Batignolles, the new north
Since October 2010 the old rail land north of Rue Cardinet has been rebuilt as Clichy-Batignolles, with plans for about 3,400 homes and 140,000 m² of offices.1 At its center, the 10 ha Parc Martin-Luther-King replaced the freight station, opening in stages from 2007 to 2020.3 A rail link to a cement plant still crosses it.3 Entrances on Rue Mstislav Rostropovitch opened in 2020, and Maison Dimanche at No. 147 bis opens at 07:30 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.3
Early starts, late closes and prices in the 17e
A Jean Bart opens at 06:00 every day but Saturday, and Le Chaptal at 75 Rue de Rome at 06:30 on weekdays. At night, L’Endroit on Place du Docteur Félix Lobligeois and Café des Dames serve until 02:00, while Le Village Café on Rue de la Terrasse closes at 01:30. Counters run a little dear: four 17e bars averaged €2.48 for a café in November 2026, against €2.32 across Paris.8

Batignolles (17e) cafés: questions
How do you get to the cafés of Batignolles in Paris by métro?
Take line 14 to Pont-Cardinet, opposite the Square des Batignolles, for the cafés around Place du Docteur Félix Lobligeois and Rue des Batignolles. Brochant on line 13 is the stop for Rue Brochant, and Porte de Clichy on lines 13 and 14 also serves the Parc Martin-Luther-King.
Where was the Café Guerbois in Batignolles, Paris?
At 9–11 Grande Rue des Batignolles, today 9 Avenue de Clichy. Manet’s circle, including Degas, Monet, Renoir and Zola, met there from the late 1860s and settled there on the 1874 group show at Nadar’s. The premises later became a brasserie and then a clothing shop, so the café no longer exists.
What does a coffee cost in Batignolles and the Paris 17e?
Four bars in the 17e averaged €2.48 for a café in November 2026, a little above the Paris average of €2.32. That is the price of a plain espresso at an ordinary bar, and it makes the arrondissement slightly dearer than the city as a whole for a basic cup.
