The former Royal Palace was built between 1904 and 1909 as the residence of King Sisavang Vong, a French gift designed by a French architect in a blend of French and Lao styles, and it is now the National Museum.1 Its best-known object is the Pha Bang, a standing Buddha of gold, silver and copper alloy, 83 cm tall.1 From the entrance in front of the museum, 328 steps climb Phou Si to That Chomsi, a stupa founded in 1804.2

Between the palace and the Mekong, a few shops keep early hours. ປະຊານິຍົມ (Pasaneyom) opens at 05:00 and closes at noon, and cafe Lao serves 06:00–14:00. Indigo Cafe, on the main street, runs 06:30–22:00, as long as the night market outside.

Local tip: Climb Phou Si for sunset, then walk down into the night market, which runs until about 22:00; Indigo Cafe across the road is open until 22:00 as well.
