Sisavangvong and Sakkaline roads run up the spine of the peninsula, with the Mekong on one side and the Nam Khan on the other. At the tip stands Wat Xieng Thong, built in 1559–1560 under King Setthathirath, a royal temple where Lao kings were crowned.1 It came through the sacking of 1887 because the Black Flag leader Đèo Văn Trị, who had studied there as a monk, made it his headquarters.1

More cafés sit on the peninsula than anywhere else in town. Saffron roasts northern Lao arabica on the Mekong side, Sahai Lao Coffee Roastery is on Sisavangvong Road, and Le Banneton and Zurich Bread Factory bake on Sakkaline Road. Joma Bakery Café has two branches here, one on Sisavangvong Road and one on Kingkitsarath Road.

Local tip: Go to Le Banneton in the morning, since it often sells out by the afternoon; on Tuesdays it also closes early, at 18:00.

Coffee chains in Peninsula & Wat Xieng Thong

Before 07:00 on Sakkaline Road

The front of Wat Xieng Thong is one of the main stretches of the morning alms round, and visitors who want to give can buy sticky rice that morning at the market or from vendors along the route.2 Cars are kept off Sakkaline Road for about two hours each morning, so the street belongs to bicycles and walkers while the cafés open.3

Zurich Bread Factory opens at 05:00 every day, and Joma's Sisavangvong Road branch at 06:00. Le Banneton opens at 06:00 except on Tuesdays, when it starts at 06:30 and closes at 18:00 instead of 21:00. Dada Cafe follows at 07:00. Wat Xieng Thong itself is open 06:00–18:00 and charges foreigners 30,000 kip; Lao citizens enter free.4

Roasters on the Mekong side and Sisavangvong Road

Saffron's café is a heritage house on the riverbank. The ground floor holds the barista counter, the roaster and a manual brew station, and the menu includes cascara kombucha and iced cascara tea with ginger, both made from dried coffee cherry skins.5 The roasts lean dark, and the company takes visitors on tours of its coffee plots and processing plant.5

Sahai Lao Coffee Roastery, in Ban Xieng Muang on Sisavangvong Road, roasts on drum roasters, and its Coffee Lab lets visitors roast a batch alongside its staff.6

Viennoiserie across from Wat Sop

France built a consulate in Luang Prabang in 1885, and French cafés are still part of the town.7 Le Banneton, opposite Wat Sop, bakes viennoiserie, layered cakes and crusty baguettes, and it often sells out in the afternoon.78 On a visit in November 2025, breakfast there ran to croissants and French toast with powdered sugar and honey.3

Zurich Bread Factory is known for its bread, and its upstairs room, used by groups, is often overlooked.9 Scandinavian Bakery and Bakery Caffe are also on the peninsula.

River terraces toward the confluence

Big Tree Cafe sits under a large tree on the Mekong bank. It is Korean-owned, serves Lao and Korean food, lights its garden at sundown and has an art gallery upstairs.9 It is open 10:00–21:30 daily. Dada Cafe, a blue corner building with a pastel pink interior, has riverside seating, two floors and a balcony.9

Farther along, Viewpoint Café is next to the Mekong Riverview Hotel in Xieng Thong village, close to where the Nam Khan meets the Mekong.84 Lum Lum coffee is on Khem Kong Road. For a late cup, Dexter on Sisavangvong Road serves until 23:00.
