Lao cooking leans on fish. Padaek, a Lao-style fish paste, flavors dips such as jaew padaek, and clear fish sauce, nam pa, is a general condiment, so a plate of vegetables is not automatically vegetarian.1 Meals also come with plenty of raw greens and herbs served on the side, from Asian basil and mint to yardlong beans and small round eggplants.1
Half the cafés with vegetarian or vegan dishes are on the peninsula and most of the rest around Wat Visoun, with Indigo Cafe by the night market as the exception. Two Little Birds, Timeless Cafe and Zaori Cafe are a short walk from each other on the Wat Visoun side.
Local tip: Two Little Birds opens at 11:00 on weekdays; for an early meat-free breakfast, Timeless Cafe opens at 07:00 and Le Banneton at 06:00.

Sticky rice is the Lao staple, and Laos eats more of it per person than any other country, about 171 kg a year.1 Or lam, a green vegetable stew, is the Luang Prabang style of the dish, and kaipen, dried sheets of Mekong river algae, is a local snack.1
Dips such as jaew mak khua, of roasted eggplant, and jaew mak len, of roasted tomato, are built on vegetables; it is still worth asking whether fish sauce went in.1 Buddhist monks are credited with bringing spices, curry and coconut milk into Lao cooking.1
In the side lanes of the night market, sellers offer sticky rice, papaya salad and fruit next to the grilled chicken.3 Monks on the morning alms round take food, never money.7
Two Little Birds is vegan and family-run, and opened in September 2019; it makes smoothie bowls and curries and serves traditional Lao coffee.2 The small room is next to the Amantaka hotel and has no espresso machine.4 It opens 11:00–21:00 on weekdays and 08:30–17:00 on weekends, so breakfast there is a weekend plan.
Timeless Cafe runs 07:00–21:30, Monday to Saturday. Cat Café, open 10:00–16:00 and closed on Tuesdays, and Zaori Cafe also have vegan choices.
Saffron, which buys its beans from hill-tribe farmers, takes its menu beyond coffee to falafel wraps, bagels and frittata, served at indoor and outdoor tables.2 Big Tree Cafe cooks Lao and Korean dishes by the Mekong.4 Rosetta Coffee is next to Heuan Chan, a heritage house open as a museum 09:00–17:00, with tickets at 30,000 kip.5
Le Banneton bakes from 06:00 on most days, and Zurich Bread Factory, open 05:00–21:00, has vegan choices among its pastries, breakfasts and bread.5
Indigo Cafe stands across the road from the sandwich stalls at the library end of the main street. It offers vegan and gluten-free food, and its rooftop looks over the night market at dusk.2 It is open 06:30–22:00 every day, with air-conditioned indoor seating and Wi-Fi.
Breakfast there is inexpensive: a bagel cost 10,000 kip in January 2024, with each spread another 10,000 kip.6
