Wat Visounnarath stands in Visoun village, a few blocks past Dara Market from the tourist information center, with the Lao Red Cross across the street.1 The temple was founded in 1512, in the reign of the king it is named after, burned in the 1887 Black Flag raid and was repaired by 1896.1 Dara Market's old supermarket, now D&T Supermarket, stocks Lao, Thai, Chinese and Malaysian goods.2

Cafés here line the side streets and Kingkitsarath Road, where L'etranger Books and Tea, Epoca, LuLaLao Coffee, Wabi Sabi and The Tea Room all have addresses. Bakeries are the other draw: Family Bakery, Full Moon Cafe & Bakery, Onson Bake & Cafe on Wisunalat Road and Zurich Bread's second café, on Phommathat Road.

Local tip: Pair the temple with a pour-over: Wat Visoun and LuLaLao both open at 08:00, and LuLaLao closes at 16:00 and is often full from December to February.

The Watermelon Stupa

That Makmo, also called That Pathoum, rises about 35 m in the temple grounds, and its rounded top looks like a cut watermelon.1 Legend credits Nang Phantixieng, the king's wife, with building it in 1514. It collapsed in 1914 and was restored in 1932 with villagers' donations; objects found inside are now in the National Museum.1

The temple is open 08:00–17:00 and a ticket costs 20,000 kip.1 From the tourist information center, walk up to Dara Market, cross two junctions and turn left; the walk takes a few minutes, and the route suits a bicycle as well.1

Pour-overs and a pond-side espresso bar

LuLaLao Coffee is an open-air room of cement and honey-colored wood with a roaster on site. Its counter lists single origins from southern and central Laos by variety, process and acidity, each drink comes with a tasting card, and earl grey cheesecake is the food to order.3 It is often full from December to February. Hours are 08:00–16:00 daily.

On Kitsalat Road, Coffee Express is entered through a wooden hut and has seats by a pond. It brews organic arabica from Den Lao Coffee in Xaisomboun province, and its iced black orange mixes cold brew with orange juice.3 It opens 07:00–17:30 every day.

Books, tea and a film at 19:00

L'etranger has been open since 2001, with hundreds of books on its walls to read or swap.4 The bookshop is downstairs, a room for drinks and cake is upstairs, and a film is shown every day at 19:00.2

The Tea Room is at 333 Kingkitsalat Road, and Wabi Sabi Cafe & Bar is on the same road. Epoca, at 1 Kingkitsarath Road, is smoke-free, has Wi-Fi and stays open 07:00–21:00.

Floor cushions and vegan kitchens

Family Bakery is small and cheap, with cushions on the floor and shoes left at the door, and its profits go to projects in northern Laos.5 Full Moon Cafe & Bakery opens 07:00–16:00 daily, and Onson Bake & Cafe at 22 Wisunalat Road 07:00–18:30, Monday to Friday.

Two Little Birds is a small family-run café with vegan dishes, and it makes traditional Lao coffee because it has no espresso machine.5 Le Petit Prince cooks with vegetables from its own farm.5 Timeless Cafe stays open until 21:30 except on Sundays, and Cat Café, open 10:00–16:00, closes on Tuesdays. Zaori Cafe has vegan options too, and Zurich Bread's Phommathat Road café has outdoor tables and Wi-Fi.
