Getting to Mangwon Market and Poeun-ro

Line 6 is the way in. From exit 2 of Mangwon station, the market is about five minutes on foot, and buses Mapo 16 and 7011 stop near it.² Mangnidan-gil, centered on Poeun-ro (포은로), takes about ten minutes from the station if you walk through the market.³ Hangang Park is within ten minutes of the market in the other direction.²

Mangwon Market and the cafés around it

Mangwon Market (망원시장) runs under a roof for about 500 m, so it works in rain.³ In 2019 it had 94 shops, seven of them street stalls, and about 300 people working in them; that July it reached full price labeling, with fresh food repriced daily.⁴ Traders' organizing began as a response to the Homeplus hypermarket that opened in Hapjeong.⁴

Around it, Cafe Comma at Poeun-ro 49 opens daily 10:00–22:00 with Wi-Fi and outdoor seats, and 카페 알롱제 at Poeun-ro 25-1 has Wi-Fi and brunch. Specialty coffee in the south of Mangwon-dong

Deep Blue Lake on Poeun-ro 6-gil is known for light Nordic-style roasts from a Loring roaster, and sells drip bags it roasts, grinds and vacuum-packs on site.⁵ Always August (올웨이즈어거스트로스터스), in a quiet residential stretch in the south of the neighborhood, is noted for its desserts as much as its coffee.⁵

Chan Chan Coffee Roasters also roasts specialty beans, as does 스트라다로스터스 in Hapjeong-dong. Donggyo-ro (동교로) has its own run at the southern end: Sontag at no. 30, with Wi-Fi, 손탁커피 리필스테이션 at no. 60, Real Coffee (리얼커피) at 32-1 and Idaho at 39.

Early, late and short-week hours

Coffee Drizzle at World Cup-buk-ro 179 starts early for Mangwon-dong, 09:00–22:00 daily, with Wi-Fi and outdoor seats. Anthracite at World Cup-ro 12-gil 11 keeps 10:00–22:00. Some shops work short weeks: Café Dong-Kyung on Mangwon-ro 6-gil opens 13:00–22:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and CACAODADA on Huiujeong-ro 10-gil only 11:00–19:00 Thursday to Saturday. BLACKBEAR DOUGHNUTS keeps 11:00–20:00 daily. On Mangwon-ro itself, Front Desk (프런트데스크) is on the second floor at no. 51.

Mangwonjeong and the river

Grand Prince Hyoryeong built the pavilion in the early Joseon period, and King Sejong named it Huiujeong (희우정) in 1425; Grand Prince Wolsan later renamed it Mangwonjeong.² Floods destroyed the original and the present building dates from 1989. It stands at Donggyo-ro 8an-gil 23, about ten minutes from the market and 872 m from exit 8 of Hapjeong station.² A city guide suggests buying food in the market and carrying it to Hangang Park for the sunset.²
