A 2014 Weekly Kyunghyang column traced Seoul's street life from Myeong-dong in the 1950s and 1960s to Jongno in the 1970s, then to Sinchon as university culture took shape; after that it spread to Apgujeong, Daehak-ro and Hongdae, leaving Sinchon crowded and jammed with traffic from the 1990s.1 Yonsei University and Ewha Womans University still anchor it; Ewha began as Ewha Haktang, founded by the missionary Mary F. Scranton on 31 May 1886.4

Starbucks chose this quarter for its start in Korea, opening its first store at Ewha in 1999, and for the 25th anniversary in autumn 2024 the branch sold a tall americano for ₩3,000, the 1999 price.5 Yonsei-ro (연세로) and its lanes have the longest run of cafés in the area, with Sinchon-ro (신촌로) next.

Local tip: For the old Sinchon, climb to Dokdabang on the eighth floor at Yonsei-ro 36, open until 23:30, then walk to Minerva on Myeongmul-gil, in business since 1975.

Exits 2 and 3 of Sinchon station on Line 2 open onto Yonsei-ro, which runs up to Yonsei's main gate.3 Ewha Womans University station is the next stop east on Line 2, and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line has its own Sinchon station, also near Ewha.34

Dokdabang and Minerva, the old names

독수리다방 (Doksuri Dabang, "eagle tearoom"), known as Dokdabang, opened in 1971 as a meeting place for students and writers.3 It shut in 2005 and reopened in January 2013 with a new interior; a third generation runs it, and it counts as a Seoul Future Heritage.12 Today it is on the eighth floor at Yonsei-ro 36, with a terrace view, and opens daily 11:00–23:30.3

Minerva (미네르바) at Myeongmul-gil 18 dates from 1975 and is described as Sinchon's first shop specializing in whole-bean coffee.2 Two other survivors of that era are in Sinchon: Hongik Books, from 1960, and Gong's Bookshop (공씨책방), a secondhand dealer founded in 1972 that moved to Sinchon in 1995.2

Yonsei-ro and its lanes

The road was rebuilt as a transit mall from 6 January 2014: four lanes became two, sidewalks widened, and only buses, large vans and emergency vehicles could use it.1 Merchants pushed back, and the city suspended the rule from January to September 2023 as a trial.6

Edae, Ewha's shopping quarter

Edae (이대), the streets by Ewha's gate, was long steered toward clothing, accessories and beauty shops, and in 2023 the head of Seodaemun District called its slump worse than Sinchon's.6 That March the district plan was changed so restaurants, performance venues, academies and clinics could move in.6

Small cafés remain in the numbered lanes: 벨라프라하 at Ewhayeodae-gil 63, Oneandonlycoffee on 7-gil and 비미남경 on 5-gil. In Daehyeon-dong, 카페드라마 is at 27-20, 그릭데이 이대본점 at 27-33 and 티앙팡 오후의홍차 ("afternoon black tea") at 54-28.

The Mapo side, toward Daeheung-ro

On the Mapo District side, 구대회 커피 is at Gwangseong-ro 36-1, 비로소커피 at Gwangseong-ro 6-gil 42 and 커피뚜깡 at Baekbeom-ro 2-gil 46, with Cafe the Puzzle on the second floor at Daeheung-ro 188-1. 머스타드 at Sungmun 16-gil 6 has Wi-Fi and outdoor seats and opens daily 09:00–21:00, an early start for this student quarter.
