Ari (อารีย์) is the neighborhood around Phahonyothin Soi 7, known as Soi Ari, in the Phaya Thai district, in the area locally called Sanam Pao.1 It was a quiet residential quarter for aristocrats, old families and senior government officials, and the Ministry of Finance, the State Audit Office and the environment ministry still have offices toward the end of the soi.1 Cafés began opening in converted shophouses in the early 2010s, as younger Thais and people in creative work moved in.2

The cafés spread from Ari south to Phaya Thai and the Victory Monument, most of them on the lanes off Phahonyothin Road within a walk of Ari station; a handful sit near the busy junctions at the Phaya Thai end.

Local tip: Ride the BTS to Ari, walk the length of Soi Ari before 10:00 while it is quiet, and come back for dinner: Casa Lapin stays open until 22:00 and Hor Hidden Café until 22:30.
