Rattanakosin Island is the city Rama I founded as his capital in 1782, bounded by the Chao Phraya to the west and by moats dug on its landward side: Khlong Khu Mueang Doem on the inside and Khlong Rop Krung, made by joining the Bang Lamphu and Ong Ang canals, further out.1 The Grand Palace and the City Pillar Shrine stand within the inner moat.1 Banglamphu (บางลำพู), to the north, is named for the lamphu, the mangrove apple; the last local tree died in 2012, after the 2011 floods.2

Coffee shops that have served breakfast since the 1930s, fresh-milk bars and specialty roasters stand within a few streets of each other, and several open before the temples do.

Local tip: Order the toast at Mont Nomsod with a glass of cold fresh milk rather than coffee: milk is what the shop has been known for since it started as a stall.

On Lok Yun, at 72 Charoen Krung Road, opened in 1933 as a kopi tiam, the Singapore-style coffee shop, a format then new to Thailand; Overseas Chinese investors, the current owner's father among them, set it up.4 The name is Cantonese for "amusement park", a nod to the Wang Burapha cinemas whose audiences ate there before the movies in the 1950s and 1960s.4 It serves a Thai take on American breakfast and kaya toast in a two-story shophouse, and by 2024 it had passed to the fourth generation.4

Kope Hya Tai Kee, at 37 Soi Samran Rat near the Giant Swing, was founded in 1952 and has been renovated several times since.5 Its house plate is fried eggs topped with spiced minced meat and a crisp baguette, alongside kaya toast and a traditional Thai iced coffee.5 A second branch faces Saranrom at 13 Charoen Krung, and Pat Cafe Bo Raan keeps the old style going daily from 07:00 to 21:00.

The best known is Mont Nomsod, at 160/1-3 Dinso Road.7 It began as a small stall in 1964, and its signature is nomsod (นมสด, fresh milk) served with toast in nine flavors, from condensed milk to pandan and sangkhaya (สังขยา, coconut custard).67 Other milk shops are close by: เหลี่ยมนมสด at 490-492 Tanao Road and นมโจ on Mahannop Road.
