Sukhumvit Road begins in Bangkok as the continuation of Rama I and Phloen Chit roads and runs 488 km to Ban Hat Lek in Trat, by the Cambodian border.1 It opened in 1936 and is named after Phra Bisal Sukhumvit, the fifth chief of the Department of Highways.1 The Bangkok end is an upscale strip of hotels, restaurants and nightclubs, popular with expatriates and wealthy Thais.6

Between Nana and Soi 51, almost no café faces the main road, which is often jammed; the cafés sit in the sois (ซอย, side lanes), and three lanes do most of the work for coffee, Sois 31 and 33, Soi 49 and Soi 16.

Local tip: At Ceresia on Soi 33/1, order a filter coffee: as of 2026 it costs the same 100฿ as a latte, and the roaster works in view behind the glass.45
