Si Lom means "windmill", probably after one a Western entrepreneur put up; road and canal were cut under King Mongkut in the 1850s and 1860s, and the canal was filled in 1963.1 With Sathon to the south it forms one of Bangkok's main business districts, the "Wall Street of Thailand".1 Khlong Sathon was dug in 1892 by the businessman Luang Sathon Racha Yut, a 3.2 km cut from Rama IV Road to the river, with a one-way road on each bank.2

Few cafés face the main roads: most sit on the side streets, from Sala Daeng and Convent Road by the park to the numbered Sathon sois, Suan Phlu and the quieter lanes of Yen Akat.

Local tip: Do Lumphini Park first, while it is cool: the gates open at 04:30, and Roastology on Saladaeng Soi 1 opens at 07:30 on weekdays, a short walk from the park's Sala Daeng corner.

Trains and Lumphini Park

Sala Daeng is the only BTS station on Si Lom Road itself, and it connects to Si Lom station on the MRT Blue Line.1 Along Sathon, the Silom Line continues to Surasak and Saphan Taksin, and a bridge links Chong Nonsi BTS station to the Sathorn stop of the bus rapid transit line.2

Lumphini Park fills the block north of Rama IV Road: 57 ha that King Rama VI gave from his own land, created in 1925 and named after Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace.3 It opens daily from 04:30 to 21:00, and around 400 Asian water monitors live around its lake.3 Roastology, on Saladaeng Soi 1, opens at 07:30 on weekdays, in time for a coffee after an early walk.

Sala Daeng, Convent Road and Silom Soi 3

Sala Daeng Road has a short run of cafés near the junction: Anan Café at number 1, Myth.bkk at 3/3, Saladrank at 8, TKT's Row House at 30/1 and Dusit Gourmet at 116. Toward the Sala Daeng end, Si Lom's side streets merge into Patpong, and the area, a financial district by day, is a nightlife hub after dark.15

On Silom Soi 3, La Cabra runs its bakery café, a Copenhagen roaster's Scandinavian-designed room, and -273° Coffee is open 09:00–19:00, Monday to Saturday.4

Specialty bars on the Sathon sois

Rocket Coffee Bar, at 147 Soi Sathon 12, was one of the first specialty coffee brands in Bangkok, and it pairs its espresso with a Western brunch menu.4 It opens daily 07:00–20:00. GROUND Coffee is at 22 Soi Sathon 11, open 08:00–17:00, and Luka, at 64/3 Pan Road, is a shophouse café run by four siblings, open 08:00–18:00.4 Pan Road, also called Soi Wat Khaek, runs past the Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu temple, whose Navaratri festival is one of Si Lom's big annual events.1

The south side of Sathon is embassy territory, with Denmark on Soi 1, Germany on Soi 9 and Australia on Soi 37.2 Mae Chan Tai Coffee Shop, at 1 South Sathorn Road, has outdoor tables and opens 07:30–17:00; ES/PE/RO Cafe is at 22 Soi Goethe.

Suan Phlu, Yen Akat and office hours

South of Sathon, Suan Phlu Road has Err at 433/4, Indy Cafe at 501 and Eamla-or Coffee House at 507/2. Yen Akat Road, further south, has AKART Day at number 30 and Break at 20/1, with Juju's House and Deep: Coffee 'n' studio in the numbered sois behind.

Plenty of cafés here keep office hours. Monochrome on Decho Road opens 07:30–16:00 on weekdays, Letter52 Cafe on Soi Santiphap 1 closes at 16:00 and shuts on Mondays, and Halfway Brunch & Roastery serves 08:00–16:00. Most close by 18:00, so plan a late coffee around Convent Road.
