Coffee reached the Thai court long before it reached the street. Nobles took to it in the reign of Rama III, early in the Bangkok era, and the king ordered a coffee plantation on the palace grounds, while ordinary people still thought of the drink as a bitter medicine brought by foreigners.1 The old town's long-running shophouse coffee shops came much later: On Lok Yun, started on Charoen Krung in 1933 by Overseas Chinese investors, and Kope Hya Tai Kee, near the Giant Swing, from 1952.23

Specialty coffee now takes a bigger share of the trade here than in the country as a whole. In LINE MAN Wongnai's 2025 figures, specialty coffee made up 66% of coffee-shop sales in the Bangkok metropolitan area, against 56% nationwide, and established shops in and around the capital grew their sales by 46%, much of it on specialty cups under 100฿.4 More than a third of the coffee businesses registered in Thailand in the first half of 2025 were based in Bangkok.5

How coffee works in Bangkok

The old-style cup is kafae boran (กาแฟโบราณ, "ancient coffee"): ground coffee, sometimes mixed with roasted corn or tamarind seeds, goes into a cloth bag and hot water is poured through it, sometimes several times for strength, before it is sweetened with sugar, condensed milk or evaporated milk.7 Served black over ice it is oliang (โอเลี้ยง); hot and black it is oyua (โอยั๊วะ); black with evaporated milk, yok lo (ยกล้อ).7

At a counter, start with the temperature: kafae yen (กาแฟเย็น) is iced and kafae ron (กาแฟร้อน) hot. Mai sai namtan (ไม่ใส่น้ำตาล) means no sugar at all, a step beyond waan noi (หวานน้อย, a little sweet), and kafae sot (กาแฟสด, "fresh coffee") is the term you will see on café signs.8

Paying is mostly done by phone: LINE MAN Wongnai found that more than half of coffee-shop customers pay digitally, and that they spend 32% more per bill on average.4 Thais don't usually tip; if you want to, keep it under 50฿, and skip it when a service charge is already on the bill.9

The weather sets the rhythm. The cool season, November to February, brings days around 32 °C and nights around 23 °C; March and April average about 35 °C, with heat indices up to 48 °C; and the wet season runs from May to October, heaviest in September and October.6 Walk between cafés in the morning and save the afternoon for an air-conditioned table.

FAQ

Cafés in Bangkok: common questions

How much does coffee cost in Bangkok?

As of 2026, an iced americano from a Bangkok street vendor costs about 50 baht, a regular cappuccino 60–150 baht, and an espresso drink at a specialty café 80–150 baht. A single-origin pour-over at a specialty roaster runs 120–300 baht. US$1 was about 33.4 baht in October 2026.

Which area of Bangkok has the most cafés?

Thonburi & Khlong San and Chatuchak & Lat Phrao have the most cafés, followed by Siam & Pathum Wan. Chatuchak and Sukhumvit have the most specialty coffee bars, and Siam has the most cafés that stay open until 21:00 or later.

What is kafae boran, the traditional coffee in Bangkok?

Kafae boran is Thailand's old-style coffee: ground coffee, sometimes mixed with roasted corn or tamarind seeds, brewed by pouring hot water through it in a cloth bag, then sweetened with sugar, condensed milk or evaporated milk. Over ice and black it is called oliang, hot and black oyua. In Bangkok, old Chinese-run shophouses such as On Lok Yun still serve it.

How do you order an unsweetened coffee in Bangkok?

Say mai sai namtan, meaning no sugar at all; waan noi only means a little sweet. Start with the temperature, kafae yen for iced or kafae ron for hot. Kafae sot, meaning fresh coffee, is the term on café signs, and Bangkok's old-style kafae boran usually comes sweet unless you ask.

Do you tip at cafés in Bangkok?

Usually not. Tipping isn't common in Thailand and Thais don't generally do it. If you want to leave something at a Bangkok café, keep it under 50 baht, and don't tip when a service charge is already on the bill. More than half of coffee-shop customers in Thailand pay digitally rather than in cash.

When is the best time of year for café-hopping in Bangkok?

The cool season, November to February, is the most comfortable, with Bangkok days around 32 °C and nights around 23 °C. March and April average about 35 °C, with heat indices up to 48 °C, and the wet season runs from May to October, with the heaviest rain in September and October.
