Thong Lo is Soi Sukhumvit 55, running north from Thong Lo BTS station to Phetchaburi Road.1 The name, often glossed as "molten gold", comes from Thonglo Khamhiran, a naval officer in the People's Party who owned land and houses here; car dealerships and modest shops gave way to boutiques, restaurants and cocktail bars in the early 2000s, helped by a large Japanese community.1 Ekkamai (เอกมัย), Soi 63, runs about 2.5 km between the same two roads, and Time Out has ranked it 27th among the world's coolest neighborhoods.2

Cafés run from the Soi 49 lanes east to Pridi Banomyong (Soi 71). Specialty coffee bars make up a larger share of its cafés than in almost any other part of Bangkok, and the roasteries cluster on Thong Lo and on the southern half of Soi 63.

Local tip: Use the BTS for cafés near Sukhumvit Road and the Saen Saep canal boat for the Phetchaburi end: boats stop at the Thong Lo pier, at the soi's northern end, from 05:30 to 20:30.16
