Bangkok's outdoor season is short. The dry, cooler northeast monsoon arrives after the rains end in October and lasts until February, and Wikivoyage calls November to February the most pleasant time of year.21 Even then it is warm: December's mean daily high is 32.3°C, though humidity is at its lowest, averaging 65.6%.2

Sukhumvit has the most cafés with outdoor seats, followed by Thonglor & Ekkamai and Bang Kapi & Ramkhamhaeng. Many of the garden tables are well away from the tourist center.

Local tip: Between May and October, take the garden table in the morning; the rain usually arrives from late afternoon, sometimes as early as 15:00.

Rain arrives in the late afternoon

The rainy season starts with the southwest monsoon around mid-May and runs until October.2 September is the wettest month, with 335.9 mm of rain over 18 rain days, and October follows with 288.7 mm.2

The downpours keep a rough timetable. Clouds build over the Andaman Sea in the morning and ride the monsoon winds inland, so Bangkok's rain usually falls from late afternoon into early evening, as early as 15:00 on days with stronger winds.3 The city's stored heat makes the evening air more unstable still.3

Smog season and covered tables

The cool months bring their own problem. From November to February, still air traps traffic exhaust, construction dust and smoke from biomass burning over the city; in early December 2025, readings of 47–59 µg/m³ set off an orange warning across the capital.4 In January 2026, City Hall asked offices to let staff work from home on 12 and 13 January, ahead of a high-risk week.5

On high-dust days, pick a café with both outdoor seats and air-conditioning. Art Café Sourire on Soi Damnoen Klang Nuea opens 06:30–15:30, DRINK COFFEE - HQ at 878 Phloen Chit Road 07:30–16:00, and Timo and Tintin at 674 Soi Chow Sue Kong in Talat Noi 09:00–18:00. Tiny Tree Garden in Phra Khanong has both and closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Gardens on Sukhumvit and in the east

On Sukhumvit, Wonderwall at 28 Sukhumvit 31 opens 07:30–19:00 and bakes, Samadool on Soi Phrom Mit starts at 07:00 on weekdays, and REAL GROCERS at 158 Sukhumvit 33 serves brunch. Hario Cafe Bangkok is on Soi Phrom Chit, and E-motion has outdoor tables until midnight.

Out east in Bang Kapi & Ramkhamhaeng, Beluga Coff & Juice at 685/2 Nawamin 14 opens 07:00–18:00, and EP.1 COFFEE & ROASTERY at 222 Khlong Lam Chiak Road runs Monday to Saturday, 08:00–18:00. Hormchui Cafe on Nawamin 8 has the longest day, 07:00–23:00. To the north, do drip coffee on Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 16/28 opens Wednesday to Sunday from 07:30.

By the river and across it

In Chinatown, La Cabra at 813 Charoen Krung Road has outdoor seats from 09:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays. Across the river in Thonburi & Khlong San, Cafe Hibiscus (Study Room) on Soi Charoen Nakhon 13 opens 08:00–21:00. In Rattanakosin & Banglamphu, Bow's Restaurant on Soi Samsen 4 runs 08:00–21:00 and Petit Peyton is at 206 Maha Chai Road.

One rule applies outside as well as in: smoking is banned in all of Bangkok's restaurants and bars, air-conditioned or not, so an open-air table is not a smoking table.1
