Specialty coffee is กาแฟพิเศษ (kafae phiset) in Thai, and the term has a working definition: coffee that scores 80 points or more on the 100-point cupping form of the Specialty Coffee Association.1 The phrase itself goes back to 1974, when Erna Knutsen used it in a trade journal for beans grown in special microclimates.1
Bangkok's roasters are spread thinly across a large city. Chatuchak & Lat Phrao and Sukhumvit, from Nana to Phrom Phong, have the most, with Siam & Pathum Wan close behind, Thonburi & Khlong San and Silom & Sathorn next, and Ratchada & Huai Khwang and Thonglor & Ekkamai level after them; elsewhere they are thinner on the ground, whether in Banglamphu, Ari or out east in Phra Khanong.
Local tip: Plan pour-over for the morning: most of these roasters close by 19:00, while The First Espresso Roaster on Soi Chana Songkhram opens at 06:00 on weekdays.
