Pankow was first documented in 1311 and takes its name from the Panke, the Spree tributary that runs through it.1 It joined Berlin in 1920 with about 58,000 residents and no town charter, and after the war the area around Majakowskiring became a restricted zone for the GDR leadership, which made “Pankow” Western shorthand for the regime.1
Today 68,836 people live here, at the end of the U2, which reached Pankow station in 2000.1 Its cafés run to cake, terraces and a small roastery, and they are spread along Florastraße and the old village center.
Local tip: Blaffke sells its coffee by the bag as well as by the cup, so take home a 250 g pack of the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe it names after Florastraße.2

Blaffke Kaffeebar und Rösterei at number 37 opened in April 2023 and has roasted its own coffee from the start, in a shared roastery in Wedding, with each variety roasted separately.2 It buys through several importers and in some cases directly from farms; in November 2026 a 250 g bag of the house blend of Brazil and Ethiopia cost €13, and the café also serves handmade cakes.2 Top10 Berlin, reviewing it in August 2026, called it roasting “ohne Schnickschnack”, without frills.3
The rest of the street covers the other hours. Daimi Bäckerei & Café at number 31 opens at 05:00 on weekdays, and Café Loubia at number 27 stays open until 22:00 from Tuesday to Sunday.
Breite Straße follows the old Dorfanger, the village green, with the church at its center and a Baroque Kavaliershaus from 1770.1 Kiez Kaffee Kraft at number 35 belongs to an owner-run family of three Berlin cafés that started in 2014; this branch is the one with the terrace, and its house coffees include a Good Morning Espresso and a filter coffee.4
Eden Café at number 43 is part of DOCK 11’s second site, which holds a dance school with over 100 courses across its two locations, studios and a garden.5
Around Vinetastraße station the cafés turn into neighborhood rooms. Vilja Café und Deli, about three minutes’ walk from the U-Bahn, is run by Thomas Looss, who bakes the cakes himself and pours coffee from the Hausbrandt roastery, with breakfast, brunch and paninis.6 It closes on Mondays, and the milk comes vegan or lactose-free on request.6 Milchmanns and Liebes Bisschen, both on Berliner Straße, open at 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends.
Schloss Schönhausen goes back to 1621, took its baroque form in the 1700s and now holds a museum on its own past.7 It served as the seat of GDR president Wilhelm Pieck from 1949 to 1960, and in June 1990 it opened the Two-plus-Four talks on reunification.1 Across the district on Wilhelm-Kuhr-Straße, Stück vom Glück is Kathleen Bliesener’s café, built around what its site calls “brutal guten Kaffee” (brutally good coffee) and cake, with live music events.8
