Wilmersdorf began as a fishing and farming village on a lake that was drained in 1915; the Volkspark Wilmersdorf now fills the old lake bed.1 Town rights came in 1906, and it had 139,468 residents when it joined Greater Berlin in 1920.1 About 101,000 people live on its 7 km² today, in blocks that reach from the Kurfürstendamm south to the Rheingau quarter.1

Kurfürstendamm and Uhlandstraße have the most cafés, ahead of Westfälische Straße, and the squares keep a share of their own: Lehniner, Ludwigkirch, Prager, Rüdesheimer.

Local tip: Café Schaubühne’s lunch needs no reservation, which makes it the easy option on Lehniner Platz before a matinee.3

Ludwigkirchplatz and Prager Platz

The streets around St. Ludwig church are known for restaurants, cafés and bars.1 Magnifique at Ludwigkirchstraße 8 opens at 07:00 on weekdays, and Sinless Cakes at number 5 sells cake from noon, Tuesday to Sunday.

Prager Platz, laid out in 1870 and badly damaged in the war, was rebuilt in 1987.1 Café Engel there bakes cakes and tortes from old recipes and makes ice cream with about 40 percent fruit, free of lactose, gluten and artificial colors.5 Just off the square on Trautenaustraße, Top10 Berlin ranks Amo Café among the city’s ten cafés for coffee lovers, praising carefully made drinks in an unhurried room.6

Rüdesheimer Platz and the Rheingau quarter

Georg Haberland planned this square around 1905, after English country-house models, and its streets take their names from towns in the Rheingau wine region.7 The link is still literal: since 1967 the Rheingauer Weinbrunnen has poured the region’s wine here from May to September, closing at 21:30.7 Gelapino on Rüdesheimer Straße counters with up to 24 freshly made ice-cream flavors, including espresso-chocolate chip, and Italian wines alongside its coffee.8 Lotte am Platz and Kaffeehaus am Platz face the square itself.
