This is a long strip of Berlin’s east rather than one neighborhood, running from the Weißer See down to the Spree. Weißensee takes its name from the lake, recorded as Wittenze in 1313, and its studios turned out films between 1913 and 1929, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari among them.1 Its Jewish cemetery is described as the largest in Europe.2

Alt-Treptow, at the southern end, is small: 13,491 residents on 2.31 km².5 Cafés out here serve people who live nearby, so expect bakeries, family rooms and cake rather than tasting flights, and plenty of early closing.

Local tip: Book ahead for Sunday breakfast at fritz & friedrich in Heinersdorf: the family-style table runs by reservation only.6

Around the Weißer See

Milchhäuschen, on the lake’s shore, opened as a municipal business in 1913, was pulled down and rebuilt in 1967, and since summer 2025 has operated as the Greek restaurant Ormos by Milchhäuschen, so come for the setting rather than Kaffee und Kuchen.1 Top10 Berlin still lists it among the city’s sunny terraces, for the view over the lake.3

The M4 tram runs along Berliner Allee, the old trade road north, at five-minute intervals on weekdays.1 Sommerregen at number 249 opens at 06:00 on weekdays. Strandbad Weissensee at 155 is the swimmers’ stop in summer and is one to bring cash for.

Langhansstraße and the art school quarter

The Weißensee art college gives this side of the district its arts scene.2 On Langhansstraße, torten & schnittchen trades in exactly what its name promises, cakes and Schnittchen (open-faced sandwiches), plus toasties, quiche and salad, to eat in, take away or have delivered to an office or an event.4 It opens Wednesday to Sunday at 08:00. Natas Berlin on Pistoriusstraße opens daily at 09:00.

Heinersdorf and the Weißenseer Weg

North of the lake, fritz & friedrich on Romain-Rolland-Straße began in 2020 as what owner Franziska Liebig-Burkert calls a small idea and has become a meeting place for Heinersdorf.6 Its family-style breakfast runs on Sundays by reservation, and it also operates a bread-roll service and catering.6

Further south, Kaffee-Haus Madlen at Weißenseer Weg 112 belongs to a family business with more than 35 years behind it, which runs its own bakery and makes its own ice cream for its coffee houses in Berlin and Brandenburg.79

Alt-Treptow: Elsenstraße and Plesser Straße

Elsenstraße got its name in 1842, took in the Graetz lamp factory from 1899 and in August 1961 was one of two temporary border crossings here.5 Today passenger coffee at number 38 is the specialty stop, open from 08:00 on weekdays. Karl-Kunger-Straße, the area’s main shopping street, was renamed in 1962 after a Treptow worker and resistance fighter executed in 1943.5

At the corner of Plesser and Kiefholzstraße, Café Grenzenlos serves a lunch that changes weekly and with the seasons, on weekdays 11:00–14:30, alongside coffee and ginger-mint tea.8 Everything is homemade from fresh ingredients, and the kitchen also caters for up to 100 people.8
