Friedenau was founded in 1871 as a planned colony of country houses, on land from the Deutsch-Wilmersdorf estate, and it joined Greater Berlin in 1920.1 At about 1.68 km² it is one of the smallest of Berlin’s localities, with streets radiating symmetrically from Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz.1

It is also a writers’ address: Günter Grass lived at Niedstraße 13 from 1963 to 1996, with Uwe Johnson next door at number 14 until 1968.1 Erich Kästner kept a second residence on the same street.1 Because the area is so compact, cafés here are a short walk apart, and they lean to bakers, cake makers and small roasters.

Local tip: Ridders closes at 14:00 on Saturdays and all day Monday, so buy beans on a Friday, when it stays open until 18:00.5

Fehlerstraße and Perelsplatz

Lehmbrucks at Fehlerstraße 1 takes its name from the sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck, who had his studio at this address over a century ago.2 It began as a small espresso bar and now has 80 seats, with homemade cake, French croissants and Bircher muesli.2 Lunch-minded visitors get bagels with brie, serrano or smoked salmon, and toasted rye bread with eggs.2

Perelsplatz, renamed in 1961 for the resistance lawyer Friedrich Justus Perels, holds Witty Stories, with tables outside; it closes on Wednesdays.1

Breslauer Platz and Rheinstraße

Rheinstraße and Hauptstraße form the district’s shopping spine, and the weekly market on Breslauer Platz, held three times a week since 1881, is one of Berlin’s oldest.1 LuLa am Markt faces it, baking its own sourdough with long fermentation and selling cinnamon rolls, sandwiches and pizza, some of it vegan.3 The bakery calls its sourdough the foundation of its craft.3

Frau Behrens Torten keeps a patisserie and chocolaterie on Rheinstraße. Its founder, Victoria Fernandez, is a trained master confectioner from Galicia, and in September 2026 Top10 Berlin put a slice with coffee at about €8–12.4 Rheinstein at number 28 opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and Café Sterntal Galerie at number 10 at 09:00.

Roasting on Schmiljanstraße

Ridders Kaffeerösterei sells highland coffees and espressos roasted slowly, at about 180 °C for about 15 minutes, and marks ten years in business with a JubiBlend.5 The shop keeps short hours, 10:00–15:00 from Tuesday to Thursday, 10:00–18:00 on Fridays and 10:00–14:00 on Saturdays, so it is one to plan for.5

Bundesallee and Südwestkorso

velicious on Bundesallee is entirely vegan and gluten-free: Steffi, a trained confectioner, and Sandy, co-managing director since 2024, make cakes, cheesecakes and bread there, with breakfast until 15:00 and a daily lunch dish from 12:00.6 Lemonade and alcohol-free beer sit alongside the coffee, and wedding cakes are made to order.6 It opens only from Thursday to Sunday.

wild caffè at Südwestkorso 63 pairs fresh cake with vegetarian and vegan breads and homemade vegan soups.7 Since February 2026 it has also served alcohol, including Espresso Martini and Barraquito, the layered coffee drink.7 The U9 stops at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and Walther-Schreiber-Platz; Bahnhof Friedenau, confusingly, is in neighboring Schöneberg.1
