Sülz takes its name from the Fronhof Sulpece, recorded in 1145 as “Villa Sultz”. It was farmland with brickworks until it joined Cologne in 1888, and with about 36,700 residents at the end of 2024 it is the city’s fourth-largest Stadtteil.1 Several University of Cologne institutes, the Studiobühne theater and the Uni-Center bring students here.1
Klettenberg was built in one go at the start of the 20th century as an extension of Sülz, with its street names approved in 1903 and 1904.2 Luxemburger Straße, with Stadtbahn line 18, is its main road; Sülz itself is served by lines 9, 13 and 18, and about 10,500 people lived there at the end of 2021.2
