Cologne’s grand cafés are Konditoreien (pastry cafés). Café Reichard, founded in 1905, faces the main portal of the cathedral with about 400 seats inside and another 400 on its terrace; after the Second World War destroyed it, the broadcaster WDR bought the building and rebuilt it in its neo-Gothic style.1 Café Jansen on Obenmarspforten goes back to the middle of the 19th century and now belongs to Fassbender, a cake-shop business based in Siegburg.1

Roasting came early to Ehrenfeld: the family firm Schamong has roasted coffee on Venloer Straße since 1949.2 The lighter-roasting newcomers arrived in the 2010s. Van Dyck was founded on Körnerstraße in summer 2010, and Ernst opened as café and roastery on Bonner Straße in the Südstadt in 2014, where an original 5 kg Diedrich still roasts some single origins.34

Then there are the Büdchen, the corner kiosks. Cologne has more than 1,000 of them, the highest concentration in North Rhine-Westphalia, some now selling coffee roasted on site, and the local band Bläck Fööss sang about them in “Kaffeebud”.5 The King Georg Büdchen on Sudermanstraße pours coffee from the zwoo roastery, to drink at the kiosk or across the road on Ebertplatz.6

Cologne by area

Cologne has nine Stadtbezirke (boroughs) and 86 Stadtteile, a structure dating from 1975; in the old town and the Neustadt, the Stadtteile divide further into Veedel, quarters with names of their own.13 Most cafés sit inside or just outside the Ringe, from the Altstadt west to Ehrenfeld and south to the Südstadt.

How coffee works in Cologne

Traditional Konditoreien still sell filter coffee by the Tasse (cup) or the Kännchen (small pot). In April 2026 Café Reichard charged €4.60 for a Tasse Kaffee, the same as its espresso, and €9.20 for a Kännchen.7 Its cake counter holds about 50 cakes, pastries, handmade chocolates and truffles.1

The Rhineland’s savory snack is the Halve Hahn. Despite the name (“half a chicken”), it is half a Röggelchen, a rye roll, with butter, a thick slice or two of medium-aged Gouda, mustard and gherkin, sometimes onion rings.8 The oldest account is a 1913 newspaper letter in which Wilhelm Vierkötter claimed to have started the joke at his birthday party in Cologne in 1877.8 Anguli Coffee in Nippes serves one alongside its flat whites and cortados.9

A tip at the counter is optional. In a May 2025 survey of about 1,000 people in Germany for the till maker Lightspeed, 32% considered a tip a matter of course when visiting a café, but only 18% tipped when ordering at the counter and 9% at self-service; a quarter said the preset percentages on card terminals put them under pressure.10

Plan Sundays ahead: about one café in four stays shut that day. For coffee before 07:00, Gran Sasso on Marienstraße in Ehrenfeld opens at 06:00 every day, and Bäckerei Kraus on Luxemburger Straße at 06:00 on most weekdays and Saturdays.
