Vegan cafés in Cologne range from fully plant-based kitchens to places where the vegan dish is one line on a longer menu. Hempies is the first kind: a 100% vegan bistro at Händelstraße 55 by Rudolfplatz, founded by Ronja because she found it hard to get good vegan snacks at the bakery in the morning.1
The Altstadt has the most cafés with vegan food, but Deutz has the highest share, about half of its cafés, most of them along the Deutzer Freiheit. The Belgisches Viertel and Ehrenfeld come next, and Kalk has more vegan-friendly cafés than its size would suggest.
Local tip: Book a slot for All You Can Pancake at the Impact Café in Sülz; the café says its courtyard is at its quietest between 14:00 and 17:00.4
Where these cafés are: Altstadt (13), Deutz & Poll (9), Belgisches Viertel (8), Ehrenfeld (7), Zülpicher Viertel (6), Kalk (5), Südstadt (5), Sülz & Klettenberg (4), Mülheim (3), Nippes (2), Lindenthal (2), Zollstock & Bayenthal (1), Agnesviertel & Eigelstein (1).

Hempies at Händelstraße opens at 07:30 on weekdays, at 09:00 on Saturday and at 10:00 on Sunday, and serves sandwiches, panini and pastries. Its second café is in the Machwerkhaus at Dillenburger Straße 87 in Kalk, with brunch, lunch specials and coffee on weekdays only.1
Gesund und Süß at Benesisstraße 48 sells cakes and sweets made by hand at a manufactory in Bonn, using only vegan and gluten-free ingredients and no refined sugar.2 At Cookie Couture on Ehrenstraße, open daily 10:00–20:30, the vegan cookies include Speculoos, Strawberry Cheesecake and a Black & White Brownie.3
At the Impact Café at Luxemburger Straße 190 the pancake batter is always vegan. The All You Can Pancake brunch puts a griddle on the table with vegan toppings for two hours, from €13.90 a person as of October 2026, and coffee from Impact’s own direct-trade roast starts at €2.30.4 From 17:00 the café turns into a bar with vegan snacks.4
Close by, Café Bauchgefühl at Berrenrather Straße 160 opens at 08:30 on weekdays except Tuesday, and Bäckerei Kraus at Luxemburger Straße 321 starts at 06:00 on most weekdays.
Cafés with vegan food line one stretch of the Deutzer Freiheit. Heimisch at numbers 72–74 cooks from Oma’s (grandma’s) recipes with regional produce: vegetables from Bornheim farmers, dairy from the Hielscher Hof in Witzhelden, bread from a wholegrain baker in Hennef and beans from Van Dyck, an organic and Fair Trade certified roastery.5 It opens daily 09:00–18:00.
ST. LOUIS Café at number 89 offers breakfast from around the world with many vegetarian and vegan options, a daily soup or salad that can be vegan, and vegan cakes.6 Kaffebar at number 66 and Café Nova at number 106, open until 20:00 from Monday to Saturday, are on the same stretch.
Café Bauturm at Aachener Straße 24–26 has been open for 30 years. It serves breakfast from 08:00 until late at night, with vegan breakfast specials, and its weekday business lunch from 12:00 to 15:00 always includes a vegan dish.7
Café Buur on Richard-Wagner-Straße opens daily 09:00–18:00, and vevi on Brüsseler Straße has tables outside. In the Altstadt, Jansen by Fassbender on Obenmarspforten, which its operator counts among the three oldest cafés in Cologne and whose interior is a listed monument, has vegan options too.8
