The Altstadt (old town) is the city inside the Ringe, the boulevards that enclose the medieval center in a semicircle from the Rhine and back to it.2 Its two halves, Altstadt-Nord and Altstadt-Süd, meet along Cäcilienstraße, Neumarkt and Hahnenstraße, and Hohe Straße and Schildergasse rank among the busiest shopping streets in Germany.2
Building on the cathedral began in 1248 and was finished to the medieval plan in 1880; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and draws about six million visitors a year.1 Café Reichard’s terrace on Unter Fettenhennen faces its main portal, and the rest of the coffee here runs from 19th-century Konditoreien to small espresso bars in the side streets.3
Local tip: Café Reichard opens at 08:30 every day, an hour and a half before Jansen by Fassbender on Obenmarspforten; on weekdays Kaffeebar Presswerk on Domstraße is already pouring at 08:00.

Café Reichard opened in 1905 and seats about 400 people indoors and as many outside, which makes it one of the largest cafés in the city. The Second World War destroyed it, and the broadcaster WDR bought the building and rebuilt it in the original neo-Gothic style.3 The specialty is layered Baumkuchen, €6.90 a portion on the April 2026 menu.4 Reichard is open daily 08:30–20:00.
Jansen by Fassbender on Obenmarspforten occupies the rooms of Café Jansen, a family café founded in the middle of the 19th century; the decor dates from the postwar economic miracle, and waitresses bring the cake to the table.3 The Fassbender café on Mittelstraße opens at 09:00 most days, at 08:00 on Fridays and at 10:00 on Sundays.
hommage on Friesenstraße roasts its own beans and serves buckwheat galettes, pastéis de nata and Nussecken (nut triangles) with them.5 Blooming Coffeebar and Roastery is on Leonhard-Tietz-Straße, and Meine Ecke Specialty Coffee opens at 08:00 Monday to Saturday and at 09:00 on Sundays.
Espresso Perfetto on Kolumbastraße serves 08:00–19:00 Monday to Saturday, and Kaffeebar Presswerk on Domstraße opens at 08:00 on weekdays only. easylivin’ on Thieboldsgasse has Wi-Fi and a terrace, and gutebohne Espressobar sits on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring, on the boulevard itself.
Some cafés counted with the old town are not in the historic Altstadt at all. The Mediapark lies in Neustadt-Nord, on the site of the Gereon freight station, which opened in 1860 and closed in 1990; the complex went up between 1987 and 2004 around an artificial lake of about 20,000 m², and Jean Nouvel’s 148.5 m KölnTurm opened there in 2001.6
About 250 companies with some 5,000 staff work in the Mediapark.6 7ieben Espresso Bar at Im Mediapark 7 opens at 08:30 on weekdays and 11:00 on Saturdays, Freiraum and Kandinsky are at numbers 4a and 5, and Coffee Fellows has a branch at number 1.
Café-Lounge on the Alter Markt opens at 06:30 for breakfast and, after a half-hour break at 10:30, serves again until 22:00. The Kaffebud on the same square shares its name, give or take a letter, with “Kaffeebud”, one of two songs the band Bläck Fööss wrote about Cologne’s kiosks.7
For later hours, Eiscafe Toto on Quatermarkt stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, Café Mercato serves until 22:00 Monday to Saturday, and Yildiz Cafe on Gereonswall runs from 13:00 to midnight every day.
