The Zülpicher Viertel is the student quarter of Neustadt-Süd, which Cologners call the Kwartier Latäng after the Latin Quarter of Paris.2 It spreads around Rathenauplatz and along Zülpicher Straße and Kyffhäuserstraße, streets lined with pubs and restaurants, among them the MTC club and the Off Broadway cinema.1
The Neustadt grew after the city wall came down from 1880 and was largely built by about 1910.1 Rathenauplatz, laid out in that expansion, was first called Königsplatz and was meant for festivals and Carnival parades.2 The University of Cologne, founded in 1388, abolished by the French in 1798 and refounded in 1919, had 45,187 students in 2023.3
Local tip: On 11 November the streets around Zülpicher Straße close from about 07:00; on ordinary days, The Coffee Gang on Hohenstaufenring opens at 08:00 Tuesday to Friday, and Café Wahlen is closed on Mondays.

Treibgut, on the same street, has Wi-Fi and opens from 11:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and Gallery 4 on Lindenstraße serves until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
When Carnival season opens on 11 November, the quarter is the center of the street party. In 2025 the city fenced off the streets around Zülpicher Straße from about 07:00, with entrances only by the university Mensa and at Roonstraße/Beethovenstraße, banned glass from 08:00 until 08:00 the next morning, and kept the Uniwiese lawn as an overflow area.6
Residents got in with an ID card showing their address, and businesses and their staff with wristbands issued in advance. Tram line 9 was diverted, and the Zülpicher Platz stop went unserved from about 09:00.6
