Ehrenfeld began in 1845 as a suburb on Venloer Straße, became a town in 1879 and joined Cologne in 1888, by which time it was an industrial district; the Helios lighthouse tower of 1885, which never guided a ship, is still its landmark.1 The DITIB Central Mosque, designed by Gottfried and Paul Böhm, opened here on 29 September 2018.1

For coffee, Ehrenfeld is roaster country. Its specialty bars cluster on Körnerstraße and Venloer Straße, between baklava and simit shops, ice-cream parlors and living-room cafés with 1970s furniture.

Local tip: Körnerstraße has three coffee stops within 30 house numbers: Van Dyck at 43, Café Sehnsucht at 67 and zwoo’s window at 73, which opens at 10:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Café Sehnsucht at number 67 stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
