Ampelokipoi (Αμπελόκηποι) means “vineyards,” and it was a leafy village before Athens reached it.2 Five of the city’s main avenues now cross it, and the cafés follow them: Mesogeion has the most, with Kifisias and Alexandras next. The day starts early on the side streets, where HUUS Kaffe Ampelokipoi on Megalou Spilaiou, Worship coffee on Veaki and iL Festino on Katechaki all open at 06:00.

Some of the city’s coffee trade works from these back streets. A former world brewing champion trains baristas on Kousianofski, a family roaster dating from 1979 keeps a bright room on Laskaridou, and a small shop near the Red Cross hospital roasts and grinds to order.3456 None of them is on the avenues.

Local tip: On a Saturday, walk the street market on Louizis Riankour, then turn onto Laskaridou, which meets it, for coffee and cake at Samba Coffee Roasters.1

Panormou and Samba on Laskaridou

Around Panormou station the workshops went first. Athens Voice’s 2019 map of the area recalls small mechanics and vulcanizers, a bar strip known as το νησάκι (to nisáki, the little island), and a metro that changed who came and what opened.1 It counted students, mostly Cypriot, and Asian families among the residents, and a Saturday street market on Louizis Riankour.1

Stefanos Kalafatas founded Samba Coffee Roasters in Athens in 1979; his son Kostas now leads it, and the roasting happens at a plant in Ano Liosia.4 The Laskaridou room is modern and bright, with beans rotated from the tropics and an open kitchen that turns out pastry and cheesecake daily.3 For later hours, Warehouse 35 at Panormou 113 runs until 03:00 every night.

Roasters on Kousianofski and by the Red Cross

Stefanos Domatiotis, the 2014 World Brewers Cup champion, founded Create Coffee Roasters as a coffee center: 145 square meters, with three fully equipped bars on the ground floor, a kitchen, a retail corner and a fleet of three Ikawa sample roasters.5 It was built around barista training and workshops, and the bars double as classrooms.5

Bonobo, at Kalamon 17 and Trikalon, sits near the Red Cross and Errikos Dunant hospitals. It roasts single origins in-house and grinds them to order, with suggestions for espresso, filter, Greek coffee or milk drinks.6 Bags from Brazil and Colombia share the shelves with capsules, espresso machines and brewing gear.6

Dimitsanas and the stadium end of Alexandras

Il primo gusto, at Dimitsanas 42, opened in 2013 under Christina’s parents, and she took over the running of it around 2025.8 LiFO’s 2026 write-up puts its appeal down to daily personal contact, the opposite of an impersonal takeaway, and the coffee is Bristot Rainforest.8 On the same street, Hope coffee&snacks at no. 32 opens at 06:00 even on Sundays.

Where Alexandras passes the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, built in the early 1920s, stands the Prosfygika (refugee housing): 228 apartments in eight Bauhaus-style blocks, put up for refugees from Asia Minor, with bullet holes from December 1944 still on the facades.2 Along the avenue at no. 169, Κοινοτικό καφενείο Λ. Αλεξάνδρας (Koinotiko Kafeneio L. Alexandras, a community coffeehouse) opens only in the evening, from 19:00 on Tuesday to Thursday and at weekends, and takes cash.

Myrtillo in the Trifylias park

Myrtillo is a social cooperative in the Park for the Child and Culture, at Trifylias and Efstathiou Lampsa, and has run as a café and events venue since October 2013.7 About 90% of its staff come from vulnerable groups, people with disabilities in particular, and all of them share responsibility for keeping the business going.7

The park’s five buildings went up after World War II with Norwegian funding. From 1957 they trained people with special needs and the war-injured in trades such as mechanics, carpentry and tailoring.7 The café has outdoor seats, Wi-Fi, a smoke-free room and wheelchair access.
