Ilisia (Ιλίσια) takes its name from the Ilisos, a river that rises near Kaisariani on Hymettus and now barely shows except in heavy rain.1 The lower western end is nicknamed “Hilton” after the hotel, while the upper part, Ano Ilisia, belongs to Zografou (Ζωγράφου), a separate municipality about 4 km east of the center with Hymettus on its eastern edge.12
The two halves drink differently. Lower Ilisia has an all-day café-bar on a square and neighborhood counters with handmade cakes; up the slope, more of the customers are students and university staff. Papadiamantopoulou has the most cafés, ahead of Grigoriou Afxentiou.
Local tip: Go up to Lalupa in the morning if you want the rooftop quiet; by evening the bar has taken over.7
