Gazi takes its character from the old Athens gasworks, which stopped operating in the mid-1980s and became the Technopolis cultural center about a decade later, at Pireos 100.4 Kerameikos, next to it, keeps the ancient cemetery and, along Salaminos, a visible stretch of the Dimosio Sima, the fifth-century BC necropolis that ran from the Dipylon gate to Plato’s Academy.4

Warehouses here have turned into clubs, bars and restaurants, so coffee here often shares a room with the drinks.4 The coffee stops are mostly mixed venues: a skatepark, a bicycle hire with a garden, and all-day rooms that switch to cocktails after dark. Καφενείο Sabir, a kafeneío (coffeehouse) on Plataion, does not open until 18:00 on weekdays.

Local tip: Reach Latraac after 12:00, when it opens, and look for the gate: the entrance on Leonidou is a tall metal one.2

Latraac behind the gate on Leonidou

Zachos Varfis, the architect and skater behind Latraac, began renting the lot on Leonidou in 2014; a townhouse from the 1860s had stood there until its demolition in the 1960s.2 The bowl was paid for with international crowdfunding, a local grant and stakes in the project, and the café was meant to cover day-to-day running, contests, film screenings and an artists’ residency.2

CNN Greece reported in March 2016 that entry to the space would be free, with a small refreshment stand helping to pay for it.1 The result has a small bar beside a laser-cut plywood bowl, which This is Athens says has hosted avant-garde dance, music nights and bowl contests.3 Free Movement Skateboarding, an NGO that teaches young Greeks and refugees, has taken it over for a day; its founders, Will Ascott and Ruby Mateja, teach up to 150 children a week, about half of them girls.3

Technopolis and the Gazi hours

Technopolis holds art exhibitions, music festivals and food fairs, and its grounds include the Industrial Gas Museum and the city’s only Skywalk; the municipal radio station is based here too.4 The 2023 Athens Coffee Festival filled it from 23 to 25 September with about 100 exhibitors, workshops, seminars, masterclasses and contests, at €5 for a single day.5

Cartone, at Persefonis 41 and Triptolemou, is an all-day café-bar and restaurant with a Mediterranean menu of pasta, risotto, burgers and pizza alongside coffee, wine and cocktails.6 Its 09:00–04:00 day is among the longest around here, and Latraac, by comparison, opens at 12:00 and closes at 01:00.

Wooden bikes in Gazi and film on Megalou Alexandrou

The Place by COCO-MAT.bike is an all-day bar and restaurant with an outdoor garden, a vegetarian menu, fresh juices and signature cocktails.7 It also rents handmade wooden bikes and runs themed routes around the city, and the garden is where a ride starts and ends.7

The Greek Film Archive holds more than 4,000 film prints at Megalou Alexandrou 136, in the former Lais cinema, which closed in 1975.4 Joker The Coffeeman is on the same street, at no. 102, and Alphaville Cafe Bar is at Salaminos 37, beside the Dimosio Sima at no. 35.4
