Most coffee in Thailand is sold by chains, and the biggest belong to fuel companies. Café Amazon, run by the fuel retailer OR, had 4,485 outlets in Thailand in April 2025 and sold about 400 million cups in 2024, roughly 1.1 million a day.1 Inthanin had 1,060 branches and Starbucks 525.1
Bangkok's specialty bars sit at the other end: fewer branches, a few neighborhoods, short opening hours and a price line that Thai customers watch closely. Above about 100 baht a cup, cafés have been losing customers since 2024, while those below it grew.3 The heat decides the rest of the day.9
Carts, chains and the 100-baht line
Street coffee in Bangkok is mostly a sugar-and-ice drink, and the carts that do better than that are worth their price; a line of local regulars is the usual sign of one.2 Above 150 baht, a September 2026 Bangkok coffee guide found, a higher price stopped buying a better cup.2 Mall cafés rate better than their setting suggests, the same guide found, while hotel cafés were mostly mediocre.2
The chains are still growing, and the fuel companies' brands fastest. Café Phunthai, owned by the fuel retailer PTG Energy, more than doubled its revenue in 2024 to 3,049 million baht and plans 5,000 outlets by 2028; Bangchak's Inthanin aims to open 200 a year.1 Starbucks, with revenue above 10 billion baht in 2024, opens about 30 branches a year.1
Carts work under City Hall's rules. Vending on Bangkok pavements is limited to designated spots, and Monday is a non-trading day set aside for cleaning them.4 In 2025 the city counted 59 "lenient zones" with 3,771 vendors, plus 321 other trading areas with 9,920 vendors.4 The cart on your corner may simply not be there on a Monday.
Specialty cafés price around the customer's limit. In November 2024 the Specialty Coffee Association of Thailand said cafés charging more than 100 baht a cup were losing customers, that those below 100 baht had grown by 60–100%, and that most buyers preferred 60–80 baht.3 Imported coffee beans are taxed at 90%.3
Thong Lo, Ekkamai and Ari
Bangkok's specialty coffee is concentrated in Thong Lo and Ekkamai.2 New openings keep landing there: of the 28 cafés on Time Out Bangkok's list of the best new cafés of 2025, eight were on Sukhumvit or its sois (ซอย, side lanes) between Soi 24 and Pridi Banomyong, among them Sukhumvit 57, Ekkamai Soi 21 and Pridi Banomyong Soi 42.6
Ari, north of the center on the BTS Sukhumvit Line, is one of Bangkok's most saturated café neighborhoods, and it hasn't lost its street-side noodle stalls and long-running Thai restaurants, which sit between the cafés.5 Exit 3 of Ari station leads into Soi Ari, and buses run along Phahonyothin Road.5 Its cafés run from matcha bars to vintage-style bakeries, and its newer restaurants now draw crowds from across the city.5
Charoen Krung, Talat Noi and Song Wat
The riverside old town turned into a café district through art and design. Speedy Grandma, a gallery and performance space on Charoen Krung Soi 28, opened in August 2012, and Soy Sauce Factory, an exhibition space and bar, and Bridge, a gallery and café with a rooftop, followed in 2014; Warehouse 30, with shops, cafés and workshops in converted World War II-era storage buildings, followed in August 2017.7 By then TCDC, Bangkok's main design library and resource center, had moved from Sukhumvit to Charoen Krung.7
Song Wat Road, a kilometer long, was built under King Rama V after a major fire in 1906 to relieve crowded Yaowarat and Sampheng, and became a center of the import and export trade, with temples, shrines and mosques side by side.8 By 2025 it had more than 20 cafés, and they were drawing young people and tourists back to the old district.6 From Hua Lamphong MRT station it is about a kilometer on foot.8
Early openings, early closings and the afternoon heat
New cafés tend to keep daytime hours. Of the 28 cafés on Time Out's 2025 list, 19 closed by 18:00 on weekdays and only two served past 20:00, while 12 opened at 07:00 or 07:30.6 Twelve closed one or two days a week, Tuesday most often.6 A café with a wine bar may stop pouring coffee at 17:00 and start pouring wine at 18:00.6
The heat sets the rest of the timetable. On 6 April 2026 the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration put the day's heat index in its "dangerous" band of 42–51.9 °C, with air temperatures of about 38–40 °C, and told people to stay out of the sun between 11:00 and 15:00.9 Plan walks between cafés for the morning, and spend the middle of the day at one air-conditioned table.
What a cup costs, and paying for it
Bangkok's daily minimum wage rose from 372 to 400 baht on 1 July 2025.10 Against that, a 100-baht specialty cup is a quarter of a day's minimum pay. Costs keep moving: arabica prices rose more than 80% in December 2024, and instant coffee went up 5% and ready-to-drink coffee about 2 baht a unit from 1 February 2025.11
International chains sit above the line. From 4 January 2024 Starbucks Thailand added 5 baht to every drink, which put a tall latte at 130 baht and a venti at 160, with soy or oat milk still 15 baht extra.15
Thai QR codes take payment from foreign apps for visitors from Laos, Hong Kong, China (UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay), South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, scanned with their home banking or wallet apps.12 Visitors from elsewhere should carry small notes for carts.
