Bread in Lao is khao jii (ເຂົ້າຈີ່), also spelled khao jee or khao chee.2 The baguette arrived with French Indochina, and split and filled with pork or Lao sausage, papaya, carrot and cilantro, it becomes khao jee pâté (ເຂົ້າຈີ່ປາເຕ), a street food found all over Laos.1 The same name, khao jee, also covers an older snack: sticky rice baked with an egg coating.2

Bakery cafés are split between the streets around Dara Market and Wat Visoun, which have the most, and the peninsula, with one more south of the center. Le Banneton, Scandinavian Bakery and Bakery Caffe are on the peninsula; Family Bakery, Full Moon, Onson and Zurich Bread's Phommathat Road café are on the Wat Visoun side.

Local tip: Check the day before you go: Onson is closed at weekends, Le Banneton closes at 18:00 on Tuesdays, and Family Bakery asks you to take your shoes off.

Where these cafés are: Wat Visoun & Dara Market (4), Peninsula & Wat Xieng Thong (3), Phou Vao Road & Phosy Market (1).

Bread after the alms round

French influence in the town goes back to a consulate opened in 1885.3 Each morning the monks walk their alms round, and residents give sticky rice and other food; visitors who want to take part can buy sticky rice that morning at the market or from vendors along the route.6

Le Banneton opens at 06:00 on most days, early enough for a croissant once the procession has passed.

Le Banneton on Sakkaline Road

Le Banneton sits at the quieter end of the main street, in a room of white walls, wood beams and an arabesque ceiling.3 A visitor in November 2025 singled out its croissant and the kindness of its staff.4 It also does vegan options and brunch, and closes at 21:00, except on Tuesdays, when it closes at 18:00.

Its counter holds French bread, tarts, pastries and cakes, and it is a quiet room for takeaway baked goods across from Wat Sop.95 Scandinavian Bakery and Bakery Caffe are both on the peninsula as well.

Around Dara Market

Family Bakery is a small, low-priced place where guests sit on floor cushions and leave their shoes at the door; it serves a good breakfast and is popular with budget travelers.5 Its profits support projects in northern Laos, and it has outdoor tables too.5

Full Moon Cafe & Bakery is open 07:00–16:00 daily, and Onson Bake & Cafe, at 22 Wisunalat Road, 07:00–18:30 on weekdays. Zurich Bread Bakery & Cafe, on Phommathat Road, has Wi-Fi and outdoor seating.

A café with a training center

South of the stadium, the Luang Prabang Deaf & Mute Community Training Centre teaches around 80 students aged 8 to 20, who attend school in the morning and train in weaving, mechanics, cooking and gardening in the afternoon.7 Its café serves meals made with produce from the center's garden, and the shop sells the scarves and purses the students make.7 The center has been running for 11 years.7

Deaf&Mute Café opens 08:00–17:30, Monday to Saturday, and sells baked goods to take away. After dark, the night market's side lanes sell baguettes alongside the sticky rice and grilled chicken.8
