El Arenal is the old sandy riverbank between the Puerta de Triana and the Torre del Oro, which handled much of Seville's port traffic; the medieval Atarazanas shipyard nearby later housed the early seat of the Casa de Contratación de Indias.1 Today it is a barrio of the Casco Antiguo with about 3,800 residents, the bullring, the opera house and the Hospital de la Caridad, founded by Miguel de Mañara.1

Its cafés sit in the short streets behind the bullring, on Calle Adriano, Calle Arfe and Calle Arjona, with a coffee stall inside the market and a roaster on the river south of the Torre del Oro.

Local tip: Walk the river past the Torre del Oro in the morning and stop at Torch on Paseo de las Delicias, where the beans are roasted in the shop.3

The Torre del Oro and a roaster on the river

The Torre del Oro is an Almohad tower built in 1220–1221, about 36 m tall, and since 1944 it has housed a naval museum run by the Spanish Navy.2

Torch Coffee, on Paseo de las Delicias, was opened in 2015 by the sisters Sara and Victoria Parish, who grew up near Antigua in Guatemala, and Victoria roasts on a one-kilogram roaster in the shop.3 In 2018 Sprudge described its main coffee as Guatemalan beans bought directly, with occasional beans from Yunnan in China, and a bright interior with breakfast, lunch and pastries.4

Behind the Maestranza

Work on the Real Maestranza bullring began in 1749 on the Baratillo hill and was only completed in 1881. It holds about 12,000, and the bullfights of the April Fair are the high point of a season that runs until late September.5 The Teatro de la Maestranza, the city's opera house, was built nearby in the 1990s, and tradition places Figaro's house from The Barber of Seville in this barrio.1

Calle Adriano, beside the bullring, has D'oro at number 17 with outdoor tables, Pompeia Cafe at 12, Taquilla at 24 and Los Valencianos, an ice-cream café, at 32. Calle Arfe has Café Boheme at 24 and Esquinte de Arfe at 26.

The Mercado del Arenal and Calle Arjona

The Mercado del Arenal was built on the site of the Cárcel del Pópulo, a 19th-century prison that closed in the 20th century.1 Cafe Tinto del Huila serves coffee from stall 4 inside the market.

Calle Arjona has Churrería Los Especiales, which is smoke-free and step-free, Eleven Coffee at number 3 and Muy Rio at 24. Santagloria has a branch at 7 Calle Canalejas, and Heladería La Fiorentina on Calle Zaragoza has Wi-Fi.

Brunch and late hours

INASS Brunch Restaurante stays open until 00:00 on most days, with a terrace, but closes on Wednesdays. Billy Brunch serves daily 09:30–17:00. On Paseo de Cristóbal Colón, along the river, Puro & Bio Heladería sells ice cream and baked goods at number 9, and Heladería Cristina on Calle Almirante Lobo has outdoor tables.

Lady Drama Café Teatro is on Calle Dos de Mayo and Balino Yoga Café on Calle Julio César, in the streets between the bullring and the Puerta de Triana.
