Nervión, east of the old town, is a district of offices, shopping centers and apartment blocks. It began with a 1910 proposal by Luis Lerdo de Tejada for a garden city on land owned by the Marquis of Nervión; Aníbal González drew a plan around the Gran Plaza, which the owner's heirs later changed.1 A tram reached it in 1923, tall housing went up from the 1960s, and hotels, malls and offices followed in the 1980s and 1990s.1

Its cafés are spread along the main avenues rather than clustered in one square: Avenida Luis de Morales by the stadium, Avenida de Eduardo Dato, Calle Luis Montoto and the side streets of Ciudad Jardín. They range from neighborhood bars to bakeries and brunch cafés.

Local tip: Arriving at Santa Justa, coffee at Cafestore on Avenida de Kansas City is on the way; Nervión metro station is about 1 km's walk.3
