Seville keeps Spanish hours. Dinner in Spain usually starts around 22:00 and prime-time television runs from 22:00 to midnight, a timetable pushed an hour later in 1940, when Franco moved the country onto Central European Time to match Germany; the clocks were never moved back.1 In summer the sun sets around 22:00.1

Coffee is not only a morning drink here. It follows lunch and dinner, and the merienda, an afternoon snack of something sweet with a coffee, falls between about 17:00 and 20:00.2 Shops and restaurants often close for around two hours after lunch, which is why some late cafés open in two shifts.1

Local tip: For a coffee after midnight on any day of the week, Calle Peris Mencheta is the safe bet: Café Hércules serves until 01:00 every night.

Where these cafés are: Centro (4), Nervión (2), Santa Cruz (2), Alameda de Hércules (1), Los Remedios (1), Triana (1), Macarena (1), El Arenal (1).

Midnight in Centro, Macarena and Nervión

Mi Lugar Favorito on Calle Regina, near Las Setas, is open 09:00–00:00 every day, with tables outside, toilets and step-free access. Rincón Maracay on Calle Almirante Ulloa starts later, at 11:00, and stays open until 00:00, or 01:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Until 22:00 or 23:30: Santa Cruz and Triana

Near the cathedral, Gusto on Calle Alemanes runs 08:30–23:30 with outdoor tables, and Salt and Sugar on Calle Ximénez de Enciso, in the lanes of Santa Cruz, bakes and pours from 08:00 to 22:00. Across the river, Casablanca dreams on Calle San Jacinto keeps the same 08:00–22:00 day.

On the Triana side of the river, Café Puerta Triana on Calle Esperanza de Triana keeps the longest day, 07:00 to 23:00, seven days a week.

Why the evening works in summer

The night is the comfortable part of a Seville summer. At the airport, the average July low is 20.3 °C, against a daytime high of 36.0 °C, and August is almost the same.4 Festival weeks run later still: the city’s 2024 draft rules for terraces allowed an extra hour past the normal 01:00 limit during Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril, and on Fridays and the eve of holidays.5

Check the day before you go: Almazen Café is closed on Mondays, INASS on Wednesdays, and Orfeo opens only at 16:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
