Three northern barrios that began with a railway: Cuadra by the tracks on O’Higgins, La Kitchen’s old hardware store and Cigaló on Holmberg.

Saavedra is the only barrio of Buenos Aires created with a formal founding act: the company Núñez y Cía. founded the village on 27 April 1873, and the document is displayed at the Museo Cornelio Saavedra.1 Rail brought the residents, with Luis María Saavedra station opening in 1891.1
Villa Urquiza, to the west, began as Francisco Seeber’s subdivision for his dock workers and took its current name in 1901.2 Coffee came to all three far later and at neighborhood scale: Latino Life counts a coffee shop on nearly every block of Núñez, set among tree-lined streets.3
Local tip: Buses carrying River Plate fans use Avenida del Libertador, so on match days stay inland at Crisólogo Larralde or Saavedra’s Núñez 3400.3

Cuadra, on O’Higgins, is where to start. Time Out describes the original as a charming corner facing the train tracks, known for laminated pastries, breads and cookies and popular with people working from a table.4 Siblings Rodrigo and Agustina Gutierrez run it, with coffee from Fuego Tostadores, and they have since added San Isidro, Palermo and Madrid.5
For a plainer breakfast, Latino Life sends readers to Jaramillo Cafe for medialunas (Argentine croissants).3 It is on 11 de Septiembre de 1888, one of the streets Latino Life walks in a barrio built around the River Plate stadium.3
In 2021 La Nación found La Kitchen in a former hardware store at Núñez 3400, which in spite of the address is in Saavedra, serving vegan and gluten-free pastry.6 Its hallmark since then has been baking in limited batches alongside specialty coffee and natural wine, as El Cronista reported in 2023, with fosforitos (puff-pastry sandwiches) made both the traditional way and with brie.7
What is on the counter varies by day, and it opens Tuesday to Sunday without reservations, so arrive early if you have a particular item in mind.7 It also has a branch on Roseti in Chacarita.4
Line B changed Villa Urquiza after 2004, when an extension brought the Echeverría and Juan Manuel de Rosas stations; some 130 buildings went up around Triunvirato and Congreso between 2004 and 2008.2 Cigaló started in Villa Urquiza about 2017 and had expanded to Colegiales and Palermo by 2021, brewing filter coffee on Chemex, V60, AeroPress and Kalita.6
The barrio’s own railway came earlier, with a station opening at Monroe and Bauness in 1889.2 Cigaló’s Holmberg 2004 address opens from 09:30 on weekdays and 10:00 on weekends, and it belonged to the Café Circular reusable-cup network in 2021.6
Zuka Cafe de Especialidad Grecia is the laptop pick: El Cronista’s 2023 review calls it a place to bring your computer and work, and notes that it welcomes pets and does takeaway.8 The menu runs from avocado toast and savory scones to almond rolls, alfajores and cakes.8 For an earlier start, BUNA Cafe de Especialidad on Crisólogo Larralde opens at 07:30 from Monday to Saturday.
