Balmain sits on its own peninsula 2 km west of the CBD, and it was an industrial town before anything else: Mort's Dock opened on Mort Bay in 1855 and closed in 1958, and the Australian Labor Party formed here in 1891.1 Green bans later stopped an expressway that would have demolished part of the suburb.1

Darling Street, the peninsula's main road, runs from the ferry wharf at Balmain East through Balmain and into Rozelle, taking most of the cafés with it.1 The outliers are a 19th-century store in Birchgrove, a small room at the far end of Mullens Street and a kitchen on Cockatoo Island.

Local tip: Check how Little Ethel's takes payment before you walk down Mullens Street: Broadsheet's last listing, from 2018, had it as cash only.3
