North Sydney was laid out as the township of St Leonards in 1836, between what are now Miller, Walker, Lavender and Berry Streets, and changed sharply in 1971–72, when 27 skyscrapers went up.1 It has limited shopping and almost no Sunday trading, and Victoria Cross metro station opened two blocks north of the old rail station in August 2024.1

Below the towers, the peninsula drops to the water at Kirribilli, Milsons Point and Lavender Bay, and runs east along Military Road to Neutral Bay. The coffee divides the same way: office espresso in the high-rise blocks, slower breakfasts on the harbor, and roasters at the junction.

Local tip: North Sydney has almost no Sunday trading, so head downhill at the weekend: Bay Ten Espresso sits under the bridge and Flying Bear on Careening Cove.1

Under the bridge: Lavender Bay and Milsons Point

Bay Ten Espresso has run since 2014 from a century-old warehouse on Middlemiss Street that once engineered steelwork for the Harbour Bridge.2 The barista station is a recycled shipping container under 10-meter ceilings, the railway rumbles overhead, and the specialty coffee comes from White Horse, with pastries from Tuga.2 It is off the main strip and takes some finding: walk down the laneway and slip into the warehouse at the top of the street, toward the bridge.2

Loulou Boulangerie & Traiteur at Milsons Point is a French bakery and gourmet takeaway that bakes four times a day, with baguettes, miche and butter croissants, plus kouign-amanns at weekends.3 It has some terrace seating, or you can carry your order to Lavender Bay Parklands.3 The traiteur side sells rotisserie chickens, country terrine and chicken liver parfait to take home.3

Kirribilli and Careening Cove

Flying Bear sits on the wharf of the Sydney Flying Squadron at 76 McDougall Street, looking over Careening Cove and a working waterfront; on race days you can watch the historic 18-footers launch.4 It takes walk-ins only, and a sunset bar takes over from 16:00, Thursday to Sunday.4

Celsius Coffee & Dining, on Holbrook Avenue, opens at 07:30 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, and has a brunch menu.

North Sydney: towers and tasters

HUMM Coffee Roasters, on the Pacific Highway, has roasted since 2018 as an independent Sydney company supplying cafés, workplaces and homes.5 Leible, on Blue Street, is led by founder and head roaster Yama (Jinwoo) Kim, Australia's first World Cup Tasters champion.6

Office hours rule elsewhere. Aslan Coffee on Miller Street trades on weekdays only, 07:00–15:00, so plan weekend coffee closer to the water.

Neutral Bay and Military Road

Governor Arthur Phillip declared this bay a neutral harbor in 1789, a place for foreign ships to anchor and take on water and supplies.7 The shopping strip at Neutral Bay Junction now runs along Military Road, the main road through to Mosman.7

Chaos Cafe, at the rear of 194 Military Road, has been in the neighborhood for more than 20 years and remains family-run, with plenty of seating outside.8 Paradox Coffee Roasters and Bay Roasters are also on Military Road.
