Pyrmont, 2 km south-west of the CBD, is named after the mineral spring at Bad Pyrmont in Germany, for a similar spring on the peninsula, and its sandstone quarries, worked from 1853, were nicknamed Paradise, Purgatory and Hell Hole by their Scottish workers.1 Ultimo owes its name to a clerical error: John Harris's offense was recorded as "ultimo" (last month) instead of "instant", which spared him a court-martial.2

Industry left after the Second World War, and by 1978 the two suburbs were down to 1,800 residents.2 The ABC, the University of Technology Sydney and TAFE now fill much of Ultimo, while Pyrmont's cafés run from Union Street's stone terraces out to the waterfront.

Local tip: To try beans before you buy, go to Stitch Coffee on Bay Street, where the brew bar sits alongside the retail shelves.6

Harris Street, from the ABC to Broadway

The ABC's Sydney headquarters is on Harris Street, and two roasters trade near its southern end.2 The Q Cafe & Roastery at number 597 is café and roastery in one and, unusually for the area, gives its closing time as 20:00 from Monday to Saturday.3

Chambers Coffee at number 646 has been roasting in Sydney since 2014 and sells its blends, single-origin decaf, chai and brew gear.4 The Poop Coffee, on the same stretch, deals in one thing: single-origin kopi luwak, the coffee passed through a civet, sourced from Java.5

Broadway and the UTS crowd

Stitch Coffee opened its roastery in Alexandria in 2015, under Nawar Adra, formerly of Circa Espresso and Brewtown Newtown.6 Its Ultimo flagship at 80 Bay Street, opposite Broadway Shopping Centre, is part retail shop and part brew bar, in a heritage building that keeps its hardwood floors and exposed beams, and it invites you to sample the range before taking a bag home.6

The shopping center stands on the site of Grace Bros' old flagship, and the Dairy Farmers' cooperative plant on Harris Street, closed in 2009, gave way to a Frank Gehry building for UTS.2 For later hours, Flappy Bird on Broadway serves until 22:00 on Thursdays and Fridays and 23:00 on Saturdays.

Union Street and old Pyrmont

Quick Brown Fox Eatery occupies a historic sandstone building on Union Street, with a terrace outside and St Ali coffee on the menu, and it serves breakfast and lunch every day, 07:00–15:00.7 The drinks list also runs to cold-pressed juices, organic kombucha and alcohol.7 The stone suits the neighborhood: Pyrmont's quarries supplied many of Sydney's most significant buildings.1

Social Brew Cafe, on Harris Street, has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables.

Jacksons Landing and the wharves

Zebra Lounge, a café and restaurant at Jacksons Landing with water and parkland views, is run by Craig Jarman, who has more than 30 years in hospitality; it serves breakfast until 11:30 and seafood at lunch, Tuesday to Sunday, and closes on Mondays.8

Pirrama Park Kiosk opens daily 07:00–16:00 with outdoor tables and vegan options. Jones Bay Wharf has its own small cluster, with Two Fratelli on the lower deck; Wharf Cafe there trades on weekdays only, 07:00–15:30.
